I keep hearing more and more stories about people getting fired. I think it's hilarious. I mean, how bad must you be at your job to actually make your boss tell you to go home--you're not welcomed here anymore?
If you have gotten fired before, and if you don't mind, explain what you were doing for it to get that point. |

It's not always because of the teacher. The school is trying to avoid extra costs. Naive teachers only in it for a year will come and cut their losses without putting up much of a fight.
1. One school wanted me to re-sign a new contract at a lower salary. I refused.
2. Another school changed managers 3 times (4 total), the 4th wanted to make up new conditions to the contract midway into the year giving me zero extra compensation for the extra work.
3. A third school had us teach fewer students longer (2 hours minimum) during the winter holiday because many regular students went on vacation. When they returned in February, the school refused to reduce the teaching time or compensate us for the extra time with overtime pay. I left at the end of that month, and the remaining teachers left a month later.
4. Then there are those privates, legal ones. One guy made a deal with me in Japan to pay me commission if I signed up students and pay me if they lived closer to me for regular classes. Instead he sent his own students already signed up for a "free trial". I caught on when the third one told me she was a regular student at their school. So, I confronted him on it. He said, "Ok, only new students from now on." The next day, he comes with a new student who signed up. We walked to the bank to get money, and he didn't give me any commission. I confronted him on that as well and he felt insulted that I asked. He said I was acting like a kid wanting to be paid immediately, but he had no problem walking to the bank to get paid for signing up and classes immediately
Another one in Japan was where I traveled a long distance to teach a student, and then the school just shut us off from each other when another teacher moved closer to the student. They didn't want to pay the transportation fee. If they had made some kind of arrangement with any new student, I would understand, but I had already committed to that time to teach this student for 2 or 3 hours and turned down other job offers.
I don't really consider these jobs you can perform poorly in, since the only important qualification is that you speak English. Maybe the question should be, how good does a school have to be before they realize how to hire decent teachers? Then would have more accurate criteria to fire and hire teachers. |

I don't think getting fired in Korea even counts. Sure some people deserve it, but a lot of them don't.
Reasons people get fired (in my opinion)
1) They make too much
2) Parents complained about them
3) They confront the higher ups when they do something stupid/illegal
4) They have the ability to think independently
5) They are unusually ugly
6) They are old
7) They make unreasonable demands
They are the easiest to fire when the school is downsizing, and boy, are schools downsizing
Reason people should get fired but don't
1) They are bad at their job
2) They have a drinking problem
3) They are stupid
4) They can't speak English |

9) Hiring a foreigner didn't bring in the big bucks that the owner thought it would --> school cuts it's losses and fires the teacher
10) School doesn't way to pay for the airfare/severance
11) The teacher is fat
12) They school found a part time teacher who will cost them less per month

School wants to save money by not paying the last month's salary and
the completion bonus (or whatever you call it) and the employer deducts the cost of the air ticket from the ex-employee's last pay.
It comes to about 5M give or take, so it's a fair chunk of change. |
