I've been talking to a friend about finding work in Seoul or possibly Busan. He is of the opinion that I should avoid salaried positions and look for something that pays hourly to avoid things like forced/unpaid overtime. So far the only one of been able to find has been Chungdahm, which I understand doesn't have the best reputation. Will most hagwons be able to work out an hourly wage option, or does anyone know of specific places I might look into?

It doesn't really matter how you slice it. Hagwon owners will make sure they won't pay you one iota more than they need to. Hourly might sound great, but all those little perks (health insurance, pension, severance, plane ticket, apartment) add up. If you are going the hourly route make sure you are making at least 30,000 won/hour or you might as well take a salary position.

I'm covered for insurance for at least another year or two and I could potentially get over there for free via frequent flyer miles. Plus I like the idea of having a little more freedom with my schedule. It seems that most people are on salary though so it can't be as bad as I've heard...

Working hourly, in most entry level positions, is just going to mean you're missing out on benefits that others enjoy (and I wouldn't depend on your parents' health insurance providing you with reliable coverage if you're living abroad, if that's your plan). Schedules don't vary that much with hourly versus salaried.

Unless you are somehow covered by the Korean National Health Service you better rethink your plan. You think Americare is going to cover you in a Korean hospital if you get burned in an apartment fire (happened to three of my friends, if you can believe it)? Good luck sorting out that paper work. |
