I saw that Hongdae has put up an advertisement on this website.
Anyone planning on applying? I might have considered it, except I already have something lined up for the fall. The conditions for my future job are very similar to what Hongdae is advertising, albeit my university has an extra 2 contact hours a week, bigger classes, slightly lower pay, and the neighborhood isn't nearly as sexy.
It seems very late in the university hiring period to be advertising for new positions. Is this how they normally do things?
I knew there are at least a few people floating around on Dave's forum who work here. What's the scoop? Do most your colleagues all have MA's in TESOL + years of university teaching experience? Is the competition still really keen? Is an MA + a few years of experience at the university pretty much the minimum threshold to get an interview? |

I've just been renewed at Hongik. Small classes, reasonably good students, helpful admin who leave you alone, opportunity to open classes (including content classes) on just about anything you want, full vacation, right to create your own schedule. Etc. I have no intention of ever leaving if i can help it (and they do keep people on past the 4 year mark).
From the people ive spoken to there, most have an MA or are working towards one so they can hang onto the job. From what ive heard from people working at other unis and read on Dave's, Hongik is the best 'mainstream' uni job out there. Its actually my first uni job, and im a little worried it will 'spoil' me. |

| Are there yearly increases, how much overtime is there, what's the overtime rate and are you allowed to work at other jobs? |

| Havent put pen to paper yet so not sure about the increase, not sure about overtime either (ive never done any but never asked for it either - the rate is over 30,000p/h), but what i do know is you can work at other places but you have to get permission first. My officemate works at a couple of other unis, that seems to be no problem but i think we cant work at hogwans. |

| You worked for a year in a place and you don't know what the overtime rate is or how much the yearly increases are? Not having a go, just a bit surprised you didn't pick it up - even if you weren't interested. |

Perhaps, but I don't think 14 hours a week and a few hundred thousand won less a month to be too shabby considering its my first "real" uni job in Korea after completing my MA last year and Hongdae is apparently cream of the crop. I am planning on applying there after I gain a couple of years of experience here anyway. Most universities with so-called great conditions (which usually amounts to 12 teaching hours or less a week and 3million+ a month with fully payed vacations) such as Seoul National University, Korea University, Hongik, Sogang, Hanyang, etc. still seem to have turnover at least once a year. |
