I've done the research and I don't really like what I see.

Any decent place in Manila looks like it goes for 2000 pesos and up.

Looking to stay in Ermita/Malate. Any suggestions for decent places for about 1000/night? Names/addresses/links appreciated.

Check Tune Hotel in Ermita. They are on a plan where you book a basic room and then add-on extra features like A/C, WiFi, etc. Prices vary depending on demand for the date, but base room is about 750p, all-in with a/c, wifi, etc. about 1,150.

Very small rooms, but they are new, modern and clean.

I have never been there but Cherry Blossoms seems ok. It's right near Robinson's Mall.

I usually stay at Rosas Garden which is about a five minute walk from Cherry Blossoms.

Not sure about Cherry Blossoms but I do know Rosas Garden will give you a pretty good breakfast in the morning.

Thanks, but all those places are closer to 2000 pesos than 1000 and not so smoker-friendly.

Will end up staying at either Sandico (sandicohotel.blogspot.kr/ )-- don't know if those are updated prices or not

or Leeson's (www.leesonsresidences.com/).

On the subject, anyone know of any 'green' spots in Manila (around that area)?

You better check to see if they are flooded out or not.

A large part of the NCR is under water at the moment.

There is a Tunes branch in Makati that I got for under 1,500 pesos per night on agoda.com or hotels.com. Avoid the Ermita/Malate area at all costs. Another place I recommend is Hotel Durban in Makati. The rooms start at 1,350 pesos and the location is good.

Leeson's has a low rating on the hotel sites. And well, many hotels are not smoker friendly for good reason.

Chill Out guesthouse is a hostel in Ermita. It's a terrible area - one of the worse ones in Manilla - and it's not safe, but the guesthouse is fairly clean and safe. There are cockroaches, but there are cockroaches all over Manilla, when you walk down the street you see them scurrying around. Just don't use the kitchen I guess.

A dorm bed will run about 400 P, as I remember? A private room with a fan is 850.

There is a hot water shower.

The staff at the hostel work hard to keep the rooms very clean, and the rooms ARE quite clean. The roaches are limited to the kitchen area, so don't prepare food there I guess.

They also have free wifi.

And, lastly, it's mostly French-language.
