Hey,
Just had a quick question. I am leaving my job at an adult hagwon after 5 months due to some miscommunication with the contract. Both the hagwon and myself are in agreeance, and I am getting a LOR this week. I was planning on going to immigration and getting a D10 visa this week, traveling to the Philippines and Hong Kong on Sunday, and coming back to look for work in 3 weeks.
The problem is, after reading some posts today, I hear it takes 2 weeks to get your new ARC with the D10 visa(I was under the assumption they wouldnt actually change the card..stupid me). I have already bought my plane tickets, and spent a lot of money for the trip, so its hard to change the dates for it.
I dont think I will have a problem leaving Korea on my current ARC, but will I be able to return with the same one? Or will it be void? Should I come back on a tourist visa, and then just pick up my new ARC? That doesnt seem like a good idea... lol
What are my options? |

If you leave the country while your new d-10 is being processed, it will cancel it.
You can leave and come back on your old visa, providing your director doesn't report the change to immigration, which they usually don't. However, you have only 14 days from the time you quit your hagwon to the time you have to apply for the d-10.
I don't know if you're technically allowed to travel during this 14 day grace period, but I would think that as long as you DON'T hand in your ARC card when you walk through immigration, they you won't have any problems. |

So.. I am taking a 3 week vacation. Does that pretty much mean its impossible to apply for the d-10 at this point?
I do have a job offer that I was considering. When you do a transfer, do you change cards at that time also?..or do you keep the same card? I wanted to do a little more digging before I decided to choose the school, but if I have to transfer, I will. |

Yes, your vacation will preclude your option to switch to a d10 or switching to a D10 will prevent you from going on your trip.
When you transfer you don't change your ARC. They simply add it to the back of your current card. You can transfer up to 30 days prior to start of the new job PROVIDED you are finished or released from your prior job.

I was told by someone that they obtained a registration certificate (of the processing of the D-10) and a receipt of purchase for the D-10 and that allowed them to leave the country and return without the actual plastic card. The guy just got back and said he had no problem.
I am planning on doing the same thing, so I hope that the peron qouted below is correct.
Here is a quote from scott teacher:

No worries.
I applied for the D10 at the immigration offices in Seoul. They told me that it would take 3 weeks to process and would be ready for collection on the 27th. My flight home, however, was booked for the 25th so I asked them if there was anyway I could get it a couple of days earlier. Considering hey had taken my E2 visa as part of the D10 process, I now had now alien card at all and wouldn't have anything to show the authorities upon returning to Korea.
The people in the office said there was nothing I could do to get the D10 visa earlier, but that they could issue me with a certificate of alien registration which said that I had paid and was waiting for the visa, and which for all intents and purposes would act like an alien card. They also gave me a receipt for the card itself (60,000 won I think).
You don't get the certificate of alien registration in the same room as the general inquiries. It's in a different office on the first floor. When you go in the front entrance, it's the office on the left. If you ask whoever you are dealing with in the general inquiries area, they will point you in the right direction. The certificate only coast 1,000 won so buy two or three of them if you like just in case you lose one
So in sum, you will need 2 documents.(1) your receipt of payment for the D10 visa and (2)the certificate of alien registration.
But you only need the certificate if you are leaving the country before you can collect the D10 visa itself. If not, then you needn't bother.
I didn't get any hassle at the airport coming back into Korea at all. I've been back for 3 weeks now and I'm just waiting to get my visa changed from D10 back to E2. No hassle |

Well here we have proof that it is possible to travel while a D10 is being processed. So on your return from travelling you can collect your ARC (with D10 addition)at the immigration office? Ttompatz? |

I would also be the last person to disagree with ttompatz, but this guy said it all went well. |

I would be the first person to question what I said when it comes to new policies and immigration changes ....
IF that was in fact his experience, and the D10 as a transfer visa is new so the policies are changing / being created fairly often, then go for it.
Worst case is they say no. No worse off that above (transfer to a new job before you travel).
Best case is you get what you want.

yeah, I get the impression that none of the immigration officers know any of the visa rules, so they are just making them up as they go along. I am headed there in a month for a preliminary discussion about this with them. I will let you know how it goes.
When we all got our ARC, before the plastic ID, we were handed a piece of paper as a receipt. I have a feeling that this is the same kind of situation where it (the paper) acts as a temporary D10. |

No, he was talking about getting the paper copy of the certificate of registration (different from an ARC but serves essentially the same purpose) for those who need to send off proof of residence in Korea.

Hey, I just got back from Suwon Immigration, and I was able to transfer to the D-10 and pick up the certificates quite easily. Now lets hope it works when I leave and come back to the country! |

I left the country with no problems, and they seemed to understand all the documents.. I guess the ultimate test will be when I come back. |
