My contract and health insurance ends August 31. After which, I will study Korean and get a D4 visa. My E2 visa ends September 30th, and due to possible complications with severance pay, my boss has told me to wait until the very end of August/early September to make the switch. I know with the D4 visa, I will be able to receive discounted health insurance.
Basically, I want to make this transition as easy as possible. I've had a lingering medical issue that may require multiple hospital visits over the next few weeks. I don't want this policy to end and then I'd have to go to the hospital for a health examination, do all the paperwork, and in the end wait for a while.
Does anyone have experience with making a smooth (and quick) transition of health insurance from E2 to D4? |

I do not have experience with making the transition.
However I wonder...if you are changing your visa, although you are likely already enrolled in the national health care plan...will they simply continue the plan at the discounted rate, or would you have to reapply/do the paperwork again under the new visa.
If the latter is the case, you may have to make a quick trip to Japan and reenter. As you probably know you have a 90 day period after entering the country to enroll. And I am curious to know that although you have already been enrolled for some time, would changing the visa and being classified as a student somehow "reset" your coverage considering it comes with a discounted price.

I suspect you will have assume full payment/self payment for health Insurance.

○ Foreigners whose income(wage) is uncertain or who have no income - Status of Sojourn : D-1(culture & arts), D-2(students), D-4(general training), F-3(dependents), F-4(overseas Koreans) - Contribution : estimated based on the average contribution of the self-employed insured for the previous year. [However, for D-2(studying aborad), 50% of the contribution estimated is reduced.]
○ Overseas Koreans - Contribution : estimated by the same formula of contribution calculation for the Korean self-employed insured [However, if the estimated contribution is below the average contribution of the self- employed for the previous year, the average contribution of Korean self-employed insured for the previous year shall be imposed. For D-2(studying aborad), 50 of the contribution estimated is reduced.] |
