I placed an order w/ Gmarket a few days ago using my Visa debit card from the States. I had placed orders before w/ them using the same card and hadn't had any issues.
This time, however, I received the following email from "현지영" ("Hyeon Ji Yeong") at "[email protected]" asking me to send a photo of my debit card:
Dear Customer,
First of all, thank you for your purchase of order no. [edited] through G-market.
As for your on-line purchase, we'd like to inform you that delivery is not available at the moment as we cannot confirm if it is your card. We don't have any way to confirm it here as long as it's an undomesticated card, unfortunately.
On this reason, we kindly ask you to send us a photo of credit card(with last 4 digit hidden).
The name on credit card should be the same as the one on ID card.
Attached photo should not be modified by any other image editing program. If it is found to be modified, your order can not be processed.
And after checking necessary date for increasing payment ceiling on Gmarket, your email will be deleted right away.
We hope that we can handle this matter ASAP so that you can receive your order soonest .
please be reminded again that we cannot proceed with this order without the confirmation mentioned above.
If you have any questions, please let us know.
Thank you for your great cooperation.
Sincerely.

회원님의 협조 감사 드립니다. 빠른 시일 내에 회신 부탁 드리겠습니다.
오늘도 좋은 하루 되십시오. 감사합니다.
Has anyone else received a similar email from Gmarket? Is it legit? As I mentioned, I hadn't had any problems w/ previous orders. The only difference between my previous orders and the current one is that I'm having the item delivered to my apartment rather than my place of employment. It seems sort of odd to me to ask for a .jpeg file of a foreign-issued bank card in order to confirm someone's identity, but then again it wouldn't surprise me that a smaller Korean company would not have a more secure way to handle issues w/ foreign-issued cards.
I haven't sent a reply yet, so any info or feedback would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Have you had Gmarket ask you for the same thing on one of your orders? I did email them at their general customer service address to try and confirm that the request was legit, but haven't gotten a response yet. I figured it could be legit, I just wanted to double check by seeing if anyone else had gotten a similar request. |

I only order from them using my Korean bank card. However, I know people who live overseas and have ordered from them using their foreign credit card and they were asked to do the same. |

I couldn't get my Korean bank card to work on their site, that's why I ended up using my foreign card. Even using Internet Explorer, their website is still kind of wonky. Anyway, thanks for the info! |

I've been asked that recently. In fact, I can no longer use my overseas card to order, as its been denied over and over even after sending a photo of it. I've used it numerous times over the past few years before the Gmarket change . |

Don't feed the undomesticated card. While cute, they can turn on you at any moment. |

just order doing a bank transfer, it's much easier. make your order as normal, then select "pay by bank transfer". then go to the atm and transfer the appropriate amount of money.
when i first started using gmarket 4 years ago, they did ask me for a copy of my card, which i gave them. but my debit card expired soon after so now i just use the transfer method. |

Actually ordering with your card at home or school is more convenient than having to either go to the bank or to wait until payday when there is more money in your account. That said, a few years ago, I had to send a copy of my card which I blanked out some of the numbers. But, in more recent year, I haven't had to do that. Expiry dates, renewed card, ect. When I paid with my Canadian visa, it always went through some extra verification step via my own bank online and that was sufficient. Also, you can pay via paypal, which also uses your credit card and is more secure. Maybe that'll help. |

I think PayPal is probably the way I'll go w/ Gmarket in the future. At any rate, I sent them a pic of my card, and they responded back and said that my order would be delivered next week. |
