Here's the situation:

It's hot as Fudge Doughnuts. If you live on the peninsula in a place without a cooling sea breeze, you know what I'm talking about. Hot Hot Hot.

Two roommates live in a BIG apartment.

It's HOT.

Roommate 1 wants to use the central-aircon to cool the apartment because it's hot.

Roommate 2 does not want to use the central-aircon to cool the apartment because it's expensive.

It's 50 pyeong, but it operates off of one massive unit; basically, it's running or it's not. And when it's running, it uses a fudgeton of electricity.

Around 70 KWh a day.

If it's run like that for the month of August, the electricity bill is going to be in the region of 1,200,000 won.

If it was run 50% of the time, both parties would be PISSED OFF.

If it's run at either 100% or 0% of the time and the bill is shared, both parties will be pissed off.

What should be done?

Fudge doughnuts are not usually hot.

But if I were you, I'd just buy a fan.

Both people should buy a fan?

But aircon guy wants aircon. Non-aircon guy already has a fan, and he'd LOVE IT if aircon guy also was happy with a fan. Unfortunately it's very very hot and aircon guy is not happy with a fan. Aircon guy wants aircon. Non-aircon guy wants everyone to have a fan.

And no, aircon guy will NOT be happy to pay the entire 1m plus electricity bill since non-aircon guy will also be getting the benefit (which he will indeed enjoy)

Both people should buy a fan. Use the aircon for short periods of time when necessary. Aircon guy should use a fan sometimes. Nonaircon guy should live with aircon sometimes.

depends... how many hours do you all spend collectively in the apt together?

I would say you should all use fans and then use the use the aircon on a timer for 2 hours right before bed time. You get to fall asleep in a nice cool place and then it turns off after a certain amount of time.

Otherwise.. maybe aircon guy could go hang out in coffeeshops or department stores or anywhere else cold when hes not working.

aircon guy should tell no aircon guy to sleep outside or get his own place.

or aircon guy can check into a motel for a few nights peaceful sleep.

I do know the answer, but I'm going to try to let you figure it out for yourself. It's the only way you'll learn. I can't be there for you to provide all the answers for the rest of your life. Teach a man to fish, etc.

A/C guy turns on A/C and pays the entire bill.

No A/C guy opens the window and sits next to it, thus not enjoying the benefit of free A/C.

Rest of the World shakes head in amazement.

Get a big thing of dry ice and stick it in the apartment. It will keep you cool, especially if you pour water on it. You can keep it between yourself and the fan.

A 30kg block should last for a couple of days. But you could buy smaller ones and keep the discarded ones in a cooler. In my experience, the smaller (ice cubed sized) pieces will sublimate at a rate of about 5kg/day.

Aircon guy buys portable unit and pays the balance for the bills.

Is no-aircon guy is genuinely that cheap that they can't afford 300 bucks to not live in sweaty misery? Or do they actually like the heat? (I know people who HATE the A/C) Or are they a cheapskate who is trying to get free aircon without paying?

Depending on their reason, that would determine what you do. If they are just being cheap, then tell them to pay up or find a new place to live.

If they genuinely don't want it, then A/C guy had better get one of those refrigerator sized portables and pony up.

If they are so broke that they can't afford it, they don't pay, but they better not be seen wasting money and prepare for the humiliation of being offered 2nd hand clothes and 5 bucks to go run errands for me.

But there is no way I'd spend my summer in misery. You're all salaried adults, you should be able to afford A/C and not go through this nonsense.

Isn't the moral of the story that people shouldn't have roommates past a certain age (say the first 2 years of uni) who are not their significant others? It's a recipe for disaster.
