Government sources said on Sunday that the nationwide minimum taxi charges, which currently range from 2,200 won ($1.94) to 2,400 won, could possibly pass the 3,000 won mark after the upcoming price change.

That'll be a big increase. |

it will be a big change and I Can't imagine people just taking it quietly.
The cab companies have to realize that less people will end up taking cabs.. |

Frankly, I think if cab drivers and bus drivers were not so lead-footed and in a constant state of racing as fast as they can to the next red light 500 meters away, they could cut their fuel expense by the same amount as they argue to raise the rates. |

Oh really, I didn't know the rates were so expensive in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Ho Chi Min, Tokyo, Taipai etc. etc. |

Yes a bunch of hoople-heads are going to forgo getting drunk because the price of beer has gone up by 60 won, likely translating into 200 more won per bottle of beer and an 800 won hike in the taxi rate.
It's not like drunks do crap like order "one more soju" then barely drink any of it as they hit the wall. It's not like they buy drinks for buddies or pick up tabs. Nope, 800 won taxi rate increase- No more drinking! Walking home! In bed before midnight! Picketing for 24 hour subways!
Give me a break. Seriously, if 800 won breaks your bank and ruins your budget, you can't afford to go out in the first place and should be at home eating gruel and licking envelopes to earn extra money. |

Can't speak for anything other than Japan on that list (not sure why you'd think I'd have any knowledge of those other cities), but the Japanese Subway is ridiculously expensive even for short trips, like 250-300yen Which is around 4000 won right now.

People do more than take taxis after getting drunk. I know some people around here seem to think Koreans don't do anything but get drunk, beat their wives and stumble home late at night, but beyond their own need to project, lots of people use the taxi for many other kinds of things, and they're also likely to take more than one taxi ride for the rest of their life. The taxi drivers are also unlikely to stop at simply a starting fare increase. They'll probably want to increase the additional rate as well. |

Fine, then if its too expensive people can walk home after midnight. Or they can buy their own car. Or they can ride a bicycle.
During the day they can take the subway or the bus.
But please spare me this "woe is me" 800 won crap. As I said, if 800 won is breaking your bank you can't afford to be on this website. Turn off your computer and save some electricity. Start growing vegetables in your laundry area.
And the OP put it in the context of having a night out. If you can't afford an 800 won hike in the base rate, you can't afford to go out and get have fun. Stay home and make money on the internet.
The taxis don't exist to be your personal chariot at the best rate for you. They exist to make the most money they can for themselves within the confines of the agreed to rate. |

alongway said "the cities he/she left". Good christ....
As for the increase, it will hit people as in Korea taking cabs is pretty darn common. |

I know you probably think the world only revolves around you and the money you have in your pocket, but there is a great big world out there full of all kinds of people. People of all kinds of socio economic backgrounds may need to take a taxi at any time for wide variety of reasons. Even in situations where a bus or subway isn't an acceptable alternative. There are actually people below middle class. You are aware of that right? That's why it's called middle class...
as for the OPs framing, well it was short sighted and vapid. I haven't really seen any compelling evidence on the behalf of the taxi drivers to show they need this increase. Maybe they need to cut 20-30% of the taxis in stead. These guys spend half their day sitting around doing nothing except blocking traffic. Improve your business and stop expecting people to bail you out because you don't want to work to the markets. |

On the bolded part....
Unless you have actual facts to support this, then you have no basis to comment on what cabs do all day, on how busy they are. Seriously, just because you see taxis waiting it does not follow they are spending half their day sitting around waiting. A lot of their day would logically be taken up by driving fares around and cruising busy areas for yet more fares in between calls. |
