My aircon looks like this one (its a small rectangular one stuck on a wall, like in most officetels)...

Anyone ever clean the filter on one of these? If so, do i need certain tools for cleaning? Do i need screwdrivers to get the filter out (if it is indeed possible for me to remove it)? Any advice would be appreciated.
I just hope that doing this will make it work a little better. My previous room seemed to have a better performance (inspite of it being similar to my current one). |

Cover should pop off. ONce their, remove the filters and either dust em outside or wash n dry em (might leave chunks too thick for your drain and you'll have to scoop em out and trash em). If you're lucky, the dust layer will peel off and you won't have to do either. |

The link doesnt work for me but you can easily take out the filters. Just put your fingers on the two sides of the unit and pull it towards you and up. Underneath you will see two filters with a thin plastic frame. Lift them up just a bit and you will be able to slide them out.
You might want to clean the cooling surface under these filters. In summer every mart sells A/C cleaning sprays. Its usually next to the cockroach/mosquito stuffs. Turn on the A/C for 20-30 minutes to let some moisture accumulate on this surface and turn it off. Spray that stuff all over it and you will find a small brush attached to the can, use that as well.
*edit: that cleaning stuff is about 4,000-4,500 krw

Yup, pop out the filters, wash and dry. Turn off A/C, spray the heat sink with A/C cleaner, re-install the filters, and turn it on for 30 minutes. |

Air Con units tend to get a lot of mold growing inside also.
I *think* that's what creates the kind of vinegary smell you get, as it blows the spores out all over the room when the thing hasn't been cleaned in a while. Wipe down the inside with diluted bleach, and also worth spraying the fans and any insides of any hoses outside with the solution.
Run the thing for 5 minutes or so while you're out of the room, so you don't breathe all the crap in.
Every time I clean out my air cons I'm horrified at the amount of crap collected inside that must be entering my lungs whenever I turn it on. |

That is why you should let it dry after each use. Just simply run it on fan setting for 30 minutes or so. Most A/Cs have a 자동건조 (automatic drying) button on the remote. If this feature is switched on you just turn off the whole thing but the fan will run for 30 minutes or so and turns completely off by itself afterwards. |
