I've been working at a hagwon for 9 months now and want to switch to EPIK for the spring intake. Has anyone made the switch, is it easy/worthwhile?

Im in Korea at the moment not sure whether to use the standard recruiters or hunt for the schools myself.. any advice?

Maybe 2 more months until you can apply? I think it's still a bit early now.

I worked in a hogwon my first year here then switched to GEPIK. I liked my hogwon, but I prefer public school. Mostly because of the time off and a little more relaxed atmosphere.
Having said that I make less money at the public school. I was earning 2.3 in the Hogwon in net pay. At the public school im earning 2.1 net (after 2 years at the same school) also public school can be pretty boring. Its not all its cracked up to be.

Its also quite easy to switch you should have no problem. Hope you get a good location and school.

It can be worthwhile if you get the location you want. But there are more restrictions with the placement now than there were before.

The main things to consider are the logistics of getting your documents transferred and what youll do/where youll be between jobs. Youre nine months into your contract, but EPIK positions dont start in three months.

If you dont want to have to get another CBC with appostille, I think (and ttompatz or someone else who knows better than me can correct me if I'm wrong) you will want to switch to a D10 visabut even then, that might not last you long enough to carry you into EPIK.

If you cant bridge that gap, pretty sure youll have to get new docs. (Not sure if D10 can be renewed or not. Something to ask ttom.)

I made the switch last year almost in your exact same position. My contract ended in December.

I was actually lazy with getting the app and completing it and my first choice (Incheon) only had about 24 spots. Still somehow I got Incheon for the March intake even after getting all documents around the beginning of December.

I hear the hiring process is a little different and you can't choose your location anymore?

Anyways it was worthwhile. I hated the hagwon (was my second contract after doing public in my first year) and when my hagwon contract finished in December, I went back to the states, took a nice vacation with my girlfriend in Hawaii, then came back to start my contract in March.

The best advice I can give to you is get started on your documents ASAP. Especially the background check. For me, I just needed to get Korean background check, and a copy of the FBI check that was already on file at Immigration. Then complete the app as soon as possible because it's first come first served.
