I was just idling around tonight and ran across a job in Oman. I've never been within several thousand miles of the place. I've read some good things (money) and some bad things about teaching in that part of the world (highly unmotivated students).

Has anyone been there (or known anyone who has worked there?)

Just wondering.

Hi,

I just moved from the UAE and have visited Oman on a few occasions. The country is made up of mountains and deserts and is sparsely populated. Muscat is a fair sized city, It has some shopping malls and a beautiful harbour. You can drink alcohol in some of the hotels in Muscat (and other cities). If you want to buy alcohol to drink at your home you need to apply for a licence from the government.

Oman is an Islamic country with not much oil wealth so it is different than UAE, Qatar, Saudi because you will see Omanis working in jobs other than government or management which is rare in the other Gulf states.

Most of the teaching jobs you see advertised in Oman are for the colleges of technology where you will be teaching students 18-25. To my knowledge, all of the classes are segregated (male/females). The colleges are in many different towns but some of these towns are small and isolated. It is also super hot in summer-up to 50c.

My friend who used to teach in Korea has been working in Oman for the past two years. First in a small town called Ibra and now in Muscat. If you are interested in teaching in Oman, I can pass on her details to you. Just let me know. Oh and also, from my experience Omanis are very nice people not like the spoilt Emiratis across in UAE.

Sounds interesting Spencer.

There has been a lot of tourism advertising for the country recently.

I guess they want english to help rake in those tourist dollars.
