I really need to get this off my chest because I took all of my will power not to rant to my class of 11 yo boys today (I had to put my fist in my mouth) and I dont want to bottle it up when my gf gets home later.
A kid comes into class today and his faced is covered in small, red cuts (around 150). I was shocked for him thinking he had maybe contracted something and went to give him sympathy. It turns out his mum in her infinite TV fuelled wisdom, had decided she didnt like his freckles (which i hadnt even noticed they were so tiny) and had them all 'lazered off' this morning. Were not talking big brown feckers here, were talking about tiny little almost- same-as skin-coloured-on-your-nose freckles.
This is the third case of medical ineptitude I have witnessed this week in my classes.
Anyway, what I really need to say is; IS THERE NO LEVEL OF STUPIDITY PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY CANT GO TO?!!!!!!
I just wanted to say that... |

| If you want levels of stupidity in this country (or others) this is pretty benign. |

| Benign, I don't think so. That's a pretty disturbing display of bad parenting. |

Yeah, it is benign. Having freckles removed is simple. They use a laser, usually green, and they hit each freckle with it. A freckle is simply melanin and it absorbs green lasers at low power levels very easily. It's generally painless, but can be described as uncomfortable by some people.
So what's the big deal? The kid had some freckles removed. Yeah, it looks unpleasant immediately afterwards but it isn't painful and it goes away within about a week, sometimes two.
Remember, this is a country where appearance is important. You see a lot of Korean kids with freckles? No. So this kid stands out; not something that is desirable in this culture. Better now then later when he becomes a wang-ta and is getting the piss taken out of him every day.
Besides, how do you even know that this kids mom made the choice? Maybe the kid complained about it. Maybe the kids already were teasing him. Maybe she was concerned about skin cancer and the dermatologist said he could remove the freckles and she wouldn't have to worry about it. There are so many possibilities that I am 99% sure you would not be able to get from an elementary school kid's explanation in a foreign language (heck, kids that young might not even be able to give an accurate account even in their first language!).
Long story short - no problem, chill out. |

Idiotic. So instead of allowing this eleven year old kid work through his own adolescent experience, deal with his minor and naturally occurring distinctions, which happen to be freckles, the wiser decision is to take a lazer to his face, so he doesn't stand out, is more culturally desirable, and doesn't get made fun of? That is an asinine argument, where you assume the supposedly esteem building procedure will benefit this eleven year old child in the long run.

The eleven year old kid made the choice? "Mom, I want freckle removal surgery?" Doubtful. |

| I like my 8 year-old male students with perms and earrings in their left ears. No, nothing will happen to you in a public school in South Africa looking like that, nuh-uh. |

Dental braces hurt, and a great deal of children that get them don't want them. Is there a difference?
(I might be wrong), but I think crooked teeth can be fashionable in Japan.
If freckles are a form of social stigma in Korea, then maybe the child is better off getting them removed. I personally like freckles on Koreans.
It's not painful to get them removed. |

| I'm shocked that this could happen in a country where teachers are hired based on solely on race and gender. Gasp! |

Your word choices, emotion and pointing out you're working with 11 y.o. boys, but sure to throw in your gf in the same sentence just sounds like someone's either majorly insecure or definitely hiding something.
Of all the things to get off one's "chest"...an 11-yo boy's pimply looking face just doesn't sound like the right thing to me. Hmm...you're kinda scary.

Its not the pimply face mate - its everything on a daily basis. I have 4 months left on my contract before i get out of this sh hole and if i dont rant im going to lamp somebody. Issues - yes. nail- head.
This place is water torture.

If I was drunk on the street molesting and shouting at people it wouldnt be fair of people to judge me based on what they could see? How else do you judge people - ask for references? |

You wish to be called a troll so here you are: troll! le troll sniffed petrol on patrol, lost control.
Anyway, your revulsion to plastic surgery is a typical reaction of a modern person trained to see the world through the filter of modernism in modern art. Beauty is a virtue and there's no reason to reject it except for your loyalty to ... counter-culture. So passe. |
