many more than that but it depends on what you (individual professor) are teaching.

The better universities are transfering over to e1 as they get more financial support from the government for foreign staff on e1 visas. but that means as a foreign professor/teacher there must be something in your academic field that Koreans can't do

My school changed over to E1 because long term teachers were sick and tired of having to get and pay for criminal records checks over and over again. That's not counting all the degree verification foolish over and over again as well.

I teach academic writing and academic presentation. A couple other optional academic courses as well. Not the run of the mill 4 skills, doesn't matter, we're still E2s. And it's a better university.

What's the benefit of the E1 over the E2? Is it just the criminal check/health check stuff? or is there more to it than that?

Bragging rights? Judging by some of the posts above.

Not much, although the avoiding the criminal check hassle is a nice convenience. And, when you go to immigration, you can go to that small room on the left (in the Omokgyo Seoul branch anyway), and don't have to wait in the long line.

I've heard it's easier to get stuff such as housing, cell phones, etc as well. Not having to get a CBC every year would be nice as well!

I never had any trouble getting housing or a cell phone as a result of having an E-2. Naturegirl, aren't you on your way to getting your F-2-7 anyway?

Having held both visa types, I agree with you Son Dureo, there is no difference in those other things like housing or cell phone contracts. The convenience at immigration is the only noticeable difference in my experience.
