Hi I am working in a hagwan and I am renewing my contract for six months. I haven't signed anything yet. I said I would renew on the grounds that I could fly home for Christmas. I have booked and paid for my own flights. My boss is covering four days of my classes. I am looking to get a pay rise. She said to my boyfriend, who is extending for two months, that they would not give him a raise because he is not extending for six months. So he said that I am extending for six months so I should be getting a raise. My boss then said no, I wouldn't get a raise because I am allowed to go home for Christmas. I will also lose my 300,000 bonus because I am missing classes. Do I have a leg to stand on asking foe a raise? It doesn't seem fair that I don't get a raise for six months just because I am missing four days at Christmas! Any advice please?!

It (salary increase) is not covered or mandated under labor law.

Negotiate your best deal or quit.

Before you quit over it, be aware that it is an employer's market and it is just as easy to replace you now as it is 6 months from now and her cost (replacing you now or next March) is the same.

Do you really think you are worth a raise? Don't you think they can get any other foreign hagwon monkey in there to do the same job you are, probably even for less money than you are making now? I'm just looking at it from their point of view. I wouldn't give a raise to any foreigner. Maybe if they worked at my company for 3 years in a row...then MAYBE I would give them a raise.

It seems your boss is being more than fair.

Yeah, I would agree, especially the fact that your boss is covering four days of classes to accomodate you, ie to go home for Christmas. I would also think that missing four working days is much more than the extra money, especially the extra emotional rest at Christmas. Yep, four days extra is definately worth more than w300K.

Any boss that accomodates you with your regular salary, is going about the call for you. I would try to keep that person happy, and stay with them; if you can.

Anyway, your call. : -)

If you were renewing for a year, I'd say a raise would be in order if you'd been a good employee. 6 months doesn't really warrant a raise. It stinks that they said that your boyfriend couldn't have one because he was only renewing for a couple of months, and that he would have at 6 months, but it's clearly not a job that you want to keep, if you're only renewing for half a year. Sorry about the bad luck, but at least you've got a nice vacation planned!

Schools save money on flights and recruiters by retaining teachers, and they save themselves the risk of ending up with an alcoholic child hater.

Not really. They can usually find another teacher through the one that is leaving or by another teacher already working there without paying a recruiter or flying in another failed, basket weaver such as yourself.

Well, I am not too sympathetic for those who try to get vacation days.

However, I feel the raise issue is a non-issue. You are owed a raise regardless. This means your boyfriend too. There is no law, but it is common sense.

If you work overtime, you should be paid overtime right?
So, why shouldn't you be paid more if you work more than a year?

If there is a limit, fine, 3 years or so. That should come with a 300,000 more salary. Should you stay with the school for 3 years is another question for another thread.

So, basically, what I would do is sign 1 year contracts and just leave. If they want to force you to a 1 year contract to get the 100,000 raise, fine, play those games.

After you are done, leave. You will get what is owed. Try to get your severance before though, in the case of your boyfriend. Forget the 2 months.

It's their choice. You are saving them flight money for another teacher possibly or recruiter fees.

It is morally wrong to take advantage when a school offers to pay a higher salary. It is morally sound to get what you can if the school is being a jerk about things. Cut your losses and move on.

I agree with the above post with the exception of his vacation days bit. Why aren't you sympathetic when a teacher wants vacation days that are a part of the contract? "Tries to get vacation days"? Perhaps these are days from the previous contract.

If not, perhaps she gets only 1 week of vacation for half a year, instead of 2 for the full year. We don't know the exact situation, but you made it sound as though teachers who "try" to get vacation days (which is usually stipulated in the contract) are asking for more than they deserve. Those vacation days are usually part of the contract.

Either way, best of luck to you, OP.

OP, you are getting a pretty fair deal here.
