Hi everyone.
I am currently in talks with schools about working in one of these two places.
I would really like some information on both, if possible. I have searched the forums and cannot find anything on Dobong. Additionally, the information I can find on Daejeon is all from 2-3 years ago. I'd like to know the state of living there now.
The most important information to me is;
How many westerners will be in the immediate area?
What is the night life like?
Are there any good nightclubs where Westerners go to?
How long honestly does it take to get from each destination to central Seoul.
But, any additional information will be gratefully received!
Thanks in advance, this forum has been invaluable in aiding me during this process.

Are you coming to Korea solely because you heard it's a party town? |

No. I'm open minded and like to explore. I am interested in art and historical monuments and am excited for mountain hiking and hot springs. I'm looking forward to imbibing a vastly different culture.
But I am 21 and the most regular thing I can imagine myself doing is enjoying nightlife and trying to make a lot of friends. Another reason for this focus is that it is easy to use transport for distant day time activities like the ones I just mentioned, but without close nightlife it is impossible to get home. |

Dobong is out on the outskirts of Seoul. Personally, I like to visit there to walk around in the mountain area and that sort of thing, but I have no idea about what it would be like to live there. I get the impression that there's very little western style nightlife. I don't think it's what you're looking for. |

Oops, wrong country. Make a left at Incheon and you'll find a much better destination for these.

Hate to tell you, but Daejeon hasn't changed notably since about 1993, when they held a World Expo there. They've just built more ugly concrete blocks everywhere, and I suppose there's a few more Western restaurants now, and a Costco. The 'state of living' there is the same as anywhere else in any major city in Korea. It's closer to Seoul than Daegu or Gwungju, but further from Busan. It's on the major trunk railway line, a bit more than an hour from Seoul on the KTX. It's full of all the same ugly junk that any other Korean city has in spades. The chains are all the same, the markets are all the same.
They have a sort-of nice civic mall thing that you can see on the sat maps, with a bunch of parks, a performing arts center, an art museum and a pretty good arboretum. The supposed 'nightlife', to the extent such a thing exists, is to the west of that, in Dunsan-dong.

Never lived in Korea, have you? Daejeon is huge and sprawling. Look at the map. Who knows where exactly you'd be living? It is unlikely there will be many, if any, in the 'immediate area.' That's why they have a Metro line.

This is me laughing. Sorry. Foreigners drinking, or overdressed pseudo-hip Koreans standing around not dancing to bad music. And there's always the booking clubs! There's your 'nightlife.' Enjoy.

No.

See above. But be aware, the last train back to Daejeon leaves at 1135. No late nights in Itaewon or Hongdae for you, unless you're willing to lay out for a love motel every time [and Friday and Saturday nights have nice extra charges for you too].
My advice: adjust your expectations, a lot, or find a different country for your 'experience.' |
