Basically, my wife and I are looking to pick up a new TV. Went into a few stores to look around last weekend and noticed that most of the nicer TV's these days are 'Smart 3D' TV's. The thing is, the salespeople wern't much help in terms of telling us how easily we can get 3D content (channels/movies) and what the actual benefit of a Smart TV is (Kept telling us about Skype, and when I asked about a camera in the TV he said, "Oh, you'll have to buy one for 70 bucks, but it's worth it!"). They basically said, you have to buy movies by downloading them from Samsung or whatever company the TV belongs too (They were very vague about how to do this). They said there's no 3D channels??.. Wondering if it's worth paying 2+million Won for a 50inch Smart TV, or if it will be a waste of money. If anyone owns one and can answer a few questions that would be great..

1)Can I change the language to English? The guy told us he didn't think so, but wasn't sure..

2) Can I get apps from North America (really looking to watch some MLB and NHL). Currently have MLB.TV and NHL Gamecenter through my computer/ipad/iphone, but would like to be able to watch them through an App on the TV if possible. The guy said there were Korean baseball Apps, but again was unsure about being able to get the MLB one from Korea.

3) Can I record things on it (DVR style)? Forgot to ask about this..

4) I heard Samsung are the best? true?

5) Is it worth paying extra for the 3D and 'Smart' capability or is it a waste?

Obviously, any other info about them would be helpful as well. Thanks.

I feel like the 3D TV and Smart TV is largely a way to keep the TV prices up. My big question is, why are TIVA TVs just cheap? They can be close to half the price of comparable Samsung/LG TVs (although they usually lack some features you'll probably not need anyway). Is it anything seriously wrong with them?

I just bought a Samsung smart 3d tv... Best purchase i've made recently =). We bought what was on sale and we didnt need the newest , biggest and best tv available. We just got a 40 inch one for the bedroom. Good tv size for a bedroom but too small for a living room. 46+ inches would be best for a living room. our 40 inch samsung 3d smart tv Cost exactly 1000$.

As for your questions

1) Yes you can change the TV to english!

2) There are alot of apps on there But maybe not all the same ones you can get in the USA... For example theres no Netflix app and what not... I haven't seen NHL or MLB apps as far as i can remember..

3) Cant record on my tv but maybe the more expensive ones can .. who knows... Just look around for english websites about TV information..

4) I like samsung. they have great customer service .. All my electronics / computer stuff is samsung and whenever something breaks they send someone over and fix it. I've bought LG before and LG has aweful service and their repair men are pretty grumpy . So in my books samsung is the best

5) I would say 3d not worth it.. but its kinda cool to have.. If you want to take advantage of 3d you should buy a 3d bluray player and 3d bluray movies... there was a london olympic app where you could watch all teh events in 3d... Anyways Not worth it i say... not enough content and its annoying to wear glasses...

If I were you I would wait for Deals to come out on Tvs.. I wouldnt buy the newest and the Best.. I'd wait for that 50 inch TV to be on sale but thats just me...

The reason Why i think its teh best purchase is because samsung TVs have something call All share. Essentially you can share content between your computer , smart phone , tablets ect. ( samsung products) with 1 click.. You just need install all share on your computer.... Its basically just a server platform. I can access all my downlaoded movied from my computer on my tv.. You need to have the tv hooked up to wifi.. Its awesome...

This sounds so much better than running a 20' HDMI cable to my TV...

Do you have to use the Samsung software or would you be able to use something like XBMC for example?

tv doesnt work with xbmc unfortunately.... Out of the box that is.. You might be able to setup some other way to use xbmc wirelessly through a media box or some kind..

you can use a server like PLEX on samsung tv but unfortunately the plex app does not work or show up in the samsung store on the newer tvs. Plex will probably fix this in later plex updates.

That said, samsung Allshare does the exact same thing though. you just need to install it on your pc/laptop and keep your pc turns on. Then you tell allshare which folders you want to share over your network.

OR your other option is to use the windows media server and share folders that way....

It all works great.. all through wireless. Some tvs dont have wireless builtin ( like mine) but you just need to buy a wifi dongle thingy. Most tv places in korea will give it to you for free with the purchase of a new tv..

ITs quite awesome. best thing i purchased recently.

I have a 46 Samsung Smart TV but I have yet to use the smart feature. I dont feel the need for 3D capability especially wont pay a couple hundred dollars more for it.
I have an HDMI cable but I mostly just use a USB drive that can be plugged straight into the TV and watch my downloaded stuff that way. That's plenty convenient for me.

Yes you can use allshare if your computer isnt samsung. Its just a program that runs on your laptop/pc...

If you have a samsung smart phone or a samsung tablet you can also use allshare on those ( its built in) . I stream movies from my computer over wifi on my galaxy tablet .. you can also play movies over wifi from your phone/tablet onto the TV... Its great!

Like i said, You DONT HAVE to use allshare if you dont want tooo. you can setup the windows media server on your computer/laptop and the TV will pick it up if your tv and computer are hooked up to the same network...

I just prefer to use allshare.

Yeah using a usb or hdmi cable works great too. But you should look into connecting your tv to your network. No need to update the USB drive with new content when you download stuff... Its alot more convenient doing things through WIFI once you have it setup! I used to do the usb drive thing too until recently..

Thank for all the info. If I can find a way to stream games through the TV I will likely buy it.. We are looking at a 50 inch for the living room and moving our old tv (36 inch) to the bedroom where it will be hooked up through HDMI to the CPU.. Wanna be able to watch the live sports in the living room though!

gotcha... Ummm I dont know about streaming Games.. If you're talking about streaming a pc game wirelessly from your computer to the TV it cannot be done with the TV alone.... Your best bet to stream games or other content would be if your Laptop has an intel chip that can do WIDI ( wifi display tech) So you can see whats the computer on your TV wirelessly BUT you need to buy a widi adaptor OR you can buy some WIFI HDMI adapters that hook up to your ocmputer and then you need a receiver that hooks up to the TV.. Theres no way to do it without buying extra TECH as far as i know....

IN your case you're better off hooking up the TV directly with a wire for all the things you want to do...

Glad I'm not into sports or playing games on my tv =).

Yeah. those might not work =p.. I tried using the free wifi from City hall to do it but its way to slow. I'd recommend you buy yourself a 30-40$ network hub/router. It's well worth it I think! bought myself a ipTIME N604v.

You can get it for 36k won on gmarket. extremely easy to setup it was pretty much plug and play + installing software

http://item.gmarket.co.kr/DetailView/Item.asp?goodscode=226438765&GoodsSale=Y&jaehuid=200002657&service_id=pcdn

But i guess this is only helpful if you pay for internet connection...
