Family Mart is defunct, changed their name. Look for a CU. |

The Korean division of the company wanted to make themselves unique or something because they don't want the same name as the stores in Japan because of Dokdo and stuff. |

Pretty sure it has to do with licensing fees, actually. |

Korea didn't want to pay the royalties to Japan so they changed to CU. |

I was told 20 years was enough to learn about how to properly run a convenience store. So, they can save some money and not pay the fees to Japan. Mini Stop and 7-11 are Japanese. GS25 is Korean. Will others follow suit? Hard to say. |

Well, that explains why they were tearing down the Family Mart near my home last week.

I saw a delivery truck today, and the sign said that as of August 1st, Family Mart was going to be called CU. I'd noticed a bunch of these new stores when in taxis, but hadn't noticed the lack of Family Marts, because my neighborhood has mainly Seven Elevens and GS Marts. |

7-11 had its roots in the United States. When I was in Japan, I was told that it was a 'Japanese' company, but was still operated by the U.S. parent company. My guess is that 7-11 in Korea had to get its licensing rights from the original company, not the subsidiary. |

The Japanese company Seven & I Holdings runs 7-11 convenience stores all over the world, a supermarket franchise called Ito Yokado, and Sogo and Seibu Department Stores.
And all I know is that Lotte's subsidiary company operates 7-11s within Korea and pays 1% of royalty to the American 7-11 company. |
