Hi,
I was wondering if anybody had heard any reviews about this school? Both good and bad would be good to know. I was also wondering if anybody had lived in Asan and could tell me about the area?
Thanks

I knew a girl who worked there, she left because they didn't pay any pension. Maybe not insurance either. No pension definitely.
And they didn't budge even when she quit. You have to go to their church on the weekends. They are religious school.

I don't know about the area but from what I read most cities in SouthKorea seem the same.

We have spoken about going to church and they have agreed to let us only go at least once a month.
Thanks for the heads up about the pension and insurance Smile

Just to keep in mind also Christian Schools in South Korea have a reputation for financial corruption and ill financial practices. The girl I know who worked at this school noticed this and talked about it, in addition to the pension matter. It is a problem in many religions, of course. But the Christians I know who have worked in South Korea say it is really bad there. So Don't be surprised about this.

I'm in Asan now and it's not bad. Plenty of grocery stores and there's an E-Mart (there might be more than one, but I'm not 100% positive). The downtown area is kind of small but it's nice and has a few coffee shops and Western places. The subway station is right by the downtown area, and there's also a pretty great open-air market, too. It's about 15 min. to Cheonan, and about 45 minutes to Seoul by the KTX (or around 2.5 hours by bus or subway).

I've only been here for about two weeks, so I'm still kind of exploring the area, etc. Unfortunately, I haven't found much of a foreigner community yet. From what I can tell, a lot of people go to Cheonan for nightlife.

Def. let me know if you do end up coming here, I'd love to meet up!

My only advice would be: DO NOT WORK HERE. I have lived in Asan (actually the town is called Onyang Oncheon where this school is) and I have yet to meet one teacher that has finished their contract. They had one friend of mine working illegally here as a 'missionary' when she was 19 and came for a gap year before starting college. They only paid her 1 million won cash in hand AND took out taxes. Once she arrived they didn't bother getting her the correct visa she had to leave the country every 90 days, but they didn't bother paying those expenses. They also will take money out for your pension, health insurance, but don't get sick, because when you go to the hospital you will get a hefty hospital bill because they didn't bother to pay your health, instead they pocketed that money for themselves. Same with the pension. This is a very corrupt (I want to say church, but from the other English teacher's experience, it is more or less a religious cult) business, they don't care about the Native Teachers, they use the Native Teachers to hide behind how corrupt they are. I will also add that they have loaned out their native teachers to work out in really rural places, that had no resources or equipment at all whatsoever, promised them overtime pay but never saw a penny of overtime. Also the whole going to church thing once a month is also a lie, you have to attend every Sunday or face the consequences. I hope that I didn't reach you too late.

Also about the area Asan, it's not so bad, they class it as 'rural' but if you get yourself a public school gig here you will get one of the best contracts for public schools in Korea, because it is Rural. That said there are plenty of restaurants and shops, everything you need to live comfortably. Also it is so easy to travel to bigger cities as well, we are not that far away from Seoul, Cheonan, Daejon, with a good train station and well connected to the KTX. I would also disagree about there being no foreigner community in Asan, there are at least 200 native teachers in Onyang/Sinchang alone and even more in the surrounding countryside areas.

If you already accepted this job and are working for Wesley, please PLEASE PM me.

I'm finishing up my third year in Asan. I live pretty close to the train station. Though from what you described RLib I think you're in the old town, called Onyang. It's Asan but not Asan (and Asan itself is Cheonan but not Cheonan...it can be slightly confusing in the beginning when you're trying to use the train to get around).

It can be pretty quiet here. As livable as anywhere else in ROK. Personally I'm counting the days til my contract is up. Enjoy the honeymoon period while it lasts, newcomers. The land grab is over. When any friends ask me now what I think about the prospect of living/working in South Korea, I shrug and say, "It's not for everyone." But inside I'm thinking-- "Run screaming."

What a terrible paradox. The most delightful students ever, the most difficult adults to work with ever. These people get more haughty and hateful every day

I hope you're in a good school RLib. And to the OP I don't know anything about the Wesley School but good luck to you.
