Okay once again the hogwan has come to the way gook in teachers and told us(not asked us) that we have to do phone teaching with each and every student at the school.....
Yes they want us to call ( I have about 125 students and my co-worker has the same) each and every student for about 4-5 minutes twice a month. My reply ..... sure if I get paid overtime....if not NO
Lets see 125x3(lets say even three minutes minimum not counting no answers and the student isnt home) = 375 minutes=6 hours and 15 minutes of my time...the reality is it is over 10 hours of my time they are asking for...after classes are finished
The director keeps saying this is the way it is in Korea just do it.....I keep telling him I am not a Korean
It is enough that I am putting in 37 hours a week as it is now they want and extra 10 a month for nothing....hellfire they are already getting 7 hours for nothing.
Nosirree BOB......If I only get paid for classtime thats all they get is classtime...no prep....no phoning...no marking....no nothing.
Oh yeah before I get jumped on... let me add that I am not allowed to give tests......ask students to do any writing......I am expected to teach 7 hours a day 5 days a week with only 10 minutes between classes to prepare. I am counting the days 46 |

Hmm, let's see, you're not Korean, but you're employed by a Korean employer ? In Korea ? Correct ?
You have no obligation to do anything outside what is spelled out in your contract. However you fact being terminated and THAT IS how it is in Korea.
You do however have total recourse ... quit your job and get one where you feel more comfortable.
Many people have the same situation and some deal with it, some quit, and others ... (well I don't know, those are the only things I imagine you can do with it).
Fact is, if you don't like it, and you've expressed that concern, and they ignore that ... then quit and claim violation of your contract work hours and what you do and don't get paid for.
But since you have only 46 days left for your contract, correct ? ... I'm sure you'll "deal with it" and thus not take a stand for what you apparently believe in and disagree with ... and, mind you, please take NO offense for this, but you're a coward acting cowardly ... if you just stick it out for sake of 46 days so you get your "bonus" then you're cowardly to come here and ask for advice and complain yet not standing up for your apparent rights all for sake of money. Again, no offense at YOU, but the scenario |

| "Phone Study," as it's called at my hokwan, has been something that has been in my schedule since I started. Considered one class session when I do it. |

I'm not a fan of phone teaching either. When I had to do it, they gave me one less class that day and I was supposed to do it during that time.
I was supposed to do it spread over 2 days, so it wasn't so bad. (number wise) But it was a total waste of time. Half the time, I couldn't even tell if I had the right house, let alone the right student. Quite often I would get an angry grandparent sceaming at me in Korean and then hanging up.
I was supposed to keep trying if the kid wasn't home or if there was no answer, but I just didn't. I put in my hour and that was that. If the Korean teachers wanted to sit around for 2 extra hours every night trying to contact some poor over worked 8 year old, that's their problem. I just refused to do more than the hour. (and I was paid for it)
After a couple of months, they just stopped asking me to do phone teaching.
Don't do it for free. They have to pay you for it or don't do it.
Don't be rude about it, just tell them no politely and keep repeating it until they get the message. |

3: Ahhhh I see you are one of those teachers that make it worse for every other teacher in Korea....yes director...I'd love to director...please stick it in my rectum one more time please .
4: If halfway through your contract they start telling you to do more work when your schedule is already full beyond what your contract states you should say NO>
5: Read some of the other posts apparently other schools consider it work....why dont you
6: Maybe your time doesnt mean anything to you but mine does |

Hey man i'm in the same boat. On my contract it said progress reports every 3 months or that 3 months is considered a term. When i get here they say progress reports are going to be every months. Yeah i like the extra 3-4 hours of work every month. Being sarcastic here. My teaching goes to s hit and i dont have as much free time.
Also they made us phone the students every 2 months and ask them 10 questions.
I dont want it but it's best sometimes to go along with it and if they complain about you, you can use this against them and say that it's not your fault.
They want me to do some sort of sleep over next weekend with the kids at the hogwon Might make up some excuse for that one. |

You better check out the concept of "troll" before you make accusations.
For the record, I'm smart enough to have a contract that is quite specific and more importantly, honored, without ambiguity. Feel free to take professionalism, loyalty, and respect and ... well who cares. I have my job, it's not ESL, I love it, live it, and am quite honored to have a part in it ... I have the job I wanted when I was 4 years old and continue to do it (in part) here in Korea and others in the same position have similar issues as the ESL folks in Korea, yet they stand up for supposed rights, based on self-esteem, professionalism, maintainance of respect of the profession, and oh so much more.
I see you didn't have the nerve to actually comment on your intention regarding finishing your contract to receive your "bonus" versus standing up for what you are CLEARLY demonstrating as your belief in the matter. You make it seem SO evident that you refuse to accept the situation and thus really should quit, but will you ? It takes little for people to say what the think they believe but light year sized nerves to stand up and act upon those beliefs. Especially when it comes to a few bucks.
As for not asking for advice ... no, you didn't, in fact I didn't see a single question mark in your post. Which then behooves the question, why bother posting ? Except of course to bore everyone with your rant on supposed mistreatment. If you want to tell stories and expect nothing in response, then make it clear before posting, or better yet, don't post at all.
The issue is, you post something and expect not advice but what ? Boohoo's and a group cry to the let the pain out to make yourself feel better ?
I won't apologize for giving my input and advice, nor for my opinion. Maybe you need to turn the light inward.
And I'd love to hear what you plan on doing about the situation. |

you know snuf as a newbie with your extensive 3? months of experience in the theater of Korea you should try to the posts before you insult someone.
Oh my god! I want to be paid for my time? Oh the horror!
To call someone a coward when you have no inkling of the crap I have put up with(and I hope you will once the honeymoon period is over about 3-5 months usually) for 10.5 months
You seem to lack knowledge of what really goes on here. Dont give me any crap about how you would stand up and quit with only 46 days left either....5.2 mil won is a fair chunk of change. Oh yeah you dont care about cash
How does me saying NO to the director make me a coward anyway? |
For the record, I've been in the forum and in Korea for 17 months. I changed my User ID not long ago after getting spammed on a daily basis. Besides, it's great to see how people react to such "newbie" comments ...
next, as for saying no to the director making you a coward ? Maybe work on your reading comprehension skills. That isn't what was said at all. The comment for being a coward is referenced as to standing here in the forum with your nose held high complaining about the treatment, as you clearly decided unfair at that, yet NOT having the guts to stand up for yourself and walk away. So, sure, you want the money, if that's the case, then stop complaining and deal with it. But I'm sure you REALLY knew what was meant.
Yes, my extensive "3?" months of experience in the theatre ... you make assumption after assumption.
And as for

Hey snufukupalot
since you dont (by your own admission) work in the ESL arena why are you here? What makes you think that you have any reference to anything that a teacher says? What makes you think anyone gives a rats sphincter what you say?
Ahhhh the guts to walk away....you mean run like a little baby back to mommy....sorry I am not you!
Ummm debate an exchange of ideas and issues....something you know sfa about.
assumption yet again...nose held high? I just thought I would share a story nothing more nothing less. It seems that the mongoloid whose nose is held high would be you
Ahhh you had to change your username because you are such a schmuck everyone hates you....I can see why you keep coming back you just love the abuse....you have nothing better to do...are a lonely drunken loser....of course these are just assumptions on my part.
I agree with Crois......shut the feck up! |

I love it !!
You really ARE a coward
There's another thread which I'd love to employ with you ... find it and I'd be happy to entertain it.
So again, you don't have the guts to stand up for yourself after the complaint of mistreatment ... correct ? |

Yes, secret, anonymous, internet alliances ... those are how real life works. When you get past 22 years of age, you'll realize that being an adult doesn't depend on what you are or what you make yourself to be on the internet
Anyhow, back to more important things ... ex-Presidents in Washington |
