I am currently working on getting a university job (I'm qualified) and have a question about general start dates. If/When I secure a position, what is the usual start date? My brother is getting married in Mexico on March 2 (Saturday), and I am curious to know if the schools will expect me to be there the week prior for orientation. I am hoping to be in Mexico for the week before the first week of March start date. Will most schools start on Monday, March 4 (since Friday, March 1 is a holiday)? Can anyone weigh in on their own experiences? Thanks!

depends.

my job, this spring we were supposed to start march 1st/2nd, which was Thursday and then actual classes on Friday. But then we got a message saying that Freshman classes were canceled so we didn't have to work until Monday.

When I first got hired, the semester started on August 29th, and my old job didn't finish until August 30th, so I didn't come to work until the 1st.

Just be upfront about it and say that you cannot be there until the March 4th. If you're qualified, it shouldn't be a huge problem. Yeah, some places won't hire you but overall, you should be able to find something, IMO.

I think most uni's expect you to start either on the first day of semester, or the first monday of semester.

Start of the semester. That means first week of March.

Not being there would be a bad way to start your time with the University!

Thanks, everybody. I know this will be a matter of working it out with the specific school I get a job at but, as the Dude would say, there's a lot of in's and out's in this case and I like to plan ahead (not always easy here). Have to plan the trip back after the wedding on Saturday, but no flights could get me to Korea until Monday morning at the earliest. I'll have February off from work, so I'm hoping I can do any administrative stuff then, before the week-long trip to Mexico, then jump in first day back. I appreciate the info, but I suppose I'll just have to wait and see... sigh. I guess I should work on getting the job first though, right? Very Happy
