Apparently, even if you're a world-famous platinum recording artist, you can't get away with tattoos in South Korea without being treated like a criminal.

Maroon 5's Adam Levine isn't shy about showing a little skin, even stripping down to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancer. But while the ladies may love "The Voice" judge's banging body, a gym in South Korea did not.
The singer, who was at a tour stop with Maroon 5, was working out in a fitness center on Sunday when he was asked to cover up his tattoos or leave.
Adam joked about the confrontation on Twitter, "I assured them it wasn't a real tiger and it wouldn't harm anyone. They didn't think this was funny. Thank GOD they didn't see the shark."
Apparently the gym's managers didn't share Levine's sense of humor.
"The manager totally stonewalled me," he tweeted. "I sang Gangam Style and did the dance and everything. Silence. the cops didn't like it either."
The "Moves Like Jagger" singer ended his series of tweets by assuring fans the incident didn't ruin his trip, "All misunderstandings aside, Korea was #maximumawesome. Thank you!!! Manila here we come!!!" |
Anyone else ever run into much grief for their tattoos? |

At the gym I go to, there are a couple of Korean guys with tattoos, and they keep them hidden while working out.
Personally, I like to think he got kicked out because he is in that shit band Maroon 5. That's reason enough. |

Strange, at my gym, lots of Koreans and Foreigners with tattoos, never get asked to cover it up. This one old man even has this amazing back piece that kinda looks like he was in some gang. Dude is pushing at least 60 and he's still ripped |

They called the police because he had a tattoo? Or was it because he's waygookin? |

Did you get him to sign your panties while he was here?
Keep enjoying all the crappy music you want, I'm hardly going to suddenly fall in love with your "stud" (!) and his shitty, shitty, shitty band because you release the power of the dreaded roll-eye emoticon. |

They called the police because they asked him to cover up the tattoos, refused, and then proceeded to joke about it and not take them seriously.
I mean, he could have complained or tried to negotiate or listen and then make his case. Instead he basically insulted their intelligence.
That being said, it's a bit silly considering Korea's K-Pop video to the world features a guy with tats in a sauna. You'd think people would get over it by now. (Assuming the tattoo was just a tiger and there wasn't like some topless chick or other graphic design). I mean good grief, kids at "Children's Day" were running around with temporary tats. Chill out. |

What gym is this? Everybody and their mother has tats these days. They can't last long with that policy. |

I noticed an increase in tats, I assumed they weren't real though. |

I think people need to remember here that this has come to light after he "joked" about it on Twitter, so what we've heard isn't necessarily a completely accurate, detailed account of what happened. I wouldn't be surprised if the guy has somewhat overdramatised and exaggerated what really occurred.
Personally, all the gyms I've used in Korea have been the cheaper, dirtier sweatbox type. I've very occasionally noticed guys with visible tattoos and no-one seemed at all bothered by it.
However, I could well imagine that a more upmarket gym here, like the kind someone like him would go to, might conceivably have a rule that tattoos should not be visible. Would that be a silly rule? Yes, maybe so. But it would not be a completely out of leftfield rule, particularly for this part of the world, and they're entirely at liberty to make whatever rules they see fit for people using their facilities. Just like Mr Maroon 5 is entirely at liberty to take his custom elsewhere if he doesn't want to cover up his tattoos.

Me too. And my gym is basically 99% Korean.

This is a strange story. |

The owner is a hero for not submitting to the ridiculous celebrity worship that goes on. I'm glad he applied to rule equally to everybody especially levine, who for some reason thought he could come here and mock the owner of a business while enjoying it's services. The sad thing is the owner and witnesses probably thought he was an ESL or military guy.
I wouldn't be surprised if he set the no tattoo policy after having a few shady customers come in affiliated with gangs, and if that is the case then even more power to him for not submitting to the glorified gang culture that goes on here as well. |
