The site Groupon has a great deal on a 150-hour online TESOL certification course offered by Tesols Preparatory Academy; it would only cost $69. Does anyone know anything about Tesols.com? It sounds too good to be true. |

Yeah I would say that its a scam. It goes under the heading of "if its too good to be true it probably isn't true". Save up your money and take a TEFL or CELTA (whichever you prefer) at a center somewhere. |

Definitely do a little digging. I saw one last year on GroupOn for a similar offer but after googling a little I read that someone who did the course said it wasn't accredited, and the certificate he was sent was printed on fax paper. Go with a TEFL that you know is 100% accredited, otherwise it's useless. |

Make sure it's accredited by whom? There is no central regulating body for TEFL and TESOL certificates. |

Well, whatever exam board accredits and regulates the certificates and course, I don't know much about it. All I know is that there's a bunch of logos at the bottom of my certificates from TEFL England, which are probably different from country to country, and course to course. |

I was about to pull the trigger on this deal as well. After reading this post I looked on their site and saw that they have a logo for ACTDEC on their site. Is anyone familiar this body? Any assistance is greatly appreciated. |

You can find TEFL providers that are affiliated with universities in the US. |

Considering the simple fact that the US is the ONLY English speaking country that allows diploma/degree mills to legally operate, that isn't necessarily a good thing or an endorsement of quality.

Whether its $69 or $6900, a TEFL is completely worthless aside from looking good on a resume and maybe getting an extra pay bump. Hell, if I was a newbie and I didn't have one, I'd just lie and say I did to try and get more money, because no one will ever check or ask about it anyways! |

No one is going to care where you got the TEFL. All they might want is to see the physical TEFL certificate or see proof that you actually took the online course. |

I don't think he's getting personal. He's actually quite right. The U.S. has become a haven for diploma mills, particularly for online degrees (Kaplan, University of Phoenix, etc). |
