I apologize if this issue has been brought up several times, I cannot get the search function to give me results and google wasn't very helpful.
I am a 31 post grad student who is intrigued by the idea of teaching in Korea.
However I am aware that they require a background check. Long story short when I was 19 I was arrested and charged for felony crimes, which in the end I pled guilty to misdemeanor charges. The charges are 12 years old.
From what I gather those will show up on my FBI background check and will likely prevent me from getting clearance for a visa in Korea because they only want clear records?
Given that it's been 12 years, I believe I am more than able to get the charges "sealed" or "expunged" from my record.
My main question is does anyone know if doing this would give me a clean fbi background check, or is there nothing I can do?
Any experience or knowledge on the subject is greatly appreciated.
(mods I apologize is this is the wrong sub-forum, I cannot post in the faq section) |

There have been stories around here of others who has "some things" show up on their CBC and were still given the visa.
Not sure how that works, but it is my guess that if the charges are not all that serious, and dont involve drugs, sex crimes..then you MIGHT be ok.
However, its hard to say until you first get the check and find out if they even show up. If they do in fact show up, you can petition to the city/county in which they were issued in to remove them from your record. There is no guarantee they will be removed, but otherwise there is little to no recourse. |

E-2 visa rules state that you cannot obtain a visa if you have anything on your national background check. That being said, yes, there are/were always a few, few cases where people have gotten their visas with a record. However, do not count on it. With the current, flooded job market, most recruiters don't look twice at a job applicant with a record.
Try to getting your record expunged. That's your best bet and make sure when it's expunged, it doesn't show up your FBI check at all. Even an arrest record will prevent you from getting a visa EVEN if it was dismissed. |

Thanks for the information.
I didn't know even arrests will harm you. It seems highly likely that this will show on my back ground check
I am still going to try and order one, but I am not holding my breath.
Would Japan be a better option for me?
Also if anyone know if expungment will show the FBI background check, that would also be helpful. |
