I recently had a class with a few adult students and we were talking about Psy's global success.

I was surprised when one student mentioned that some Koreans were embarassed by him. I asked why and the student said "he looks Chinese and was fat, so foreigners would have that impression of Koreans."

The other students in the class nodded in agreement.

Then I read this article:

Quote:
Why Asians Aren't Dancing in the Streets Gangnam Style

Quote:
Gangnam Style is one catchy-ass tune, the most infectiously, dancelicious song since C+C Music Factory's Everybody Dance Now. But unless you look like me, or live in South Korea, we Asians find white enthusiasm for this monster hit suspect.

The Korean entertainer Psy (short for Psycho) looks an awful lot like William Hung. You remember that lovable dork from American Idol who sang "She Bangs"?

Non-Asians freakin' LOVED William Hung. Not only did they love him, they LOVED that they LOVED him. And when fandom morphs into this irrational meta-love -- when we love that we love something - that's telling.

There's a few gems in this article which I'll save for later discussion.

That's an interesting response they gave you. I can't tell you how many times I've been with a Korean girl and pointed out an actor or someone, only to have them go "he's ugly". Little superficiality problem going on here.

An article that makes whitey out to be racist...couldn't see than coming. Ironically, he states that Psy looks like William Hung. If a white person said that, it would be the old "Oh, so we all look alike to you, don't we?" spiel.

Completely lost any sense of credibility from the first sentence--

Rolling Eyes

Don't know if it's just the writer that actually believes this, or do others?

KS will be remembered more like Macarena or I'm too sexy. Hardly groundbreaking, very un-like C/C or BlackBox.

If one of Rain's many Korean hit singles went into heavy rotation worldwide Gangnam Style I think white women would be intrigued to have their lady bits excited by a singer who didn't look like Justin Timberlake or Justin Bieber or Ice Tea or Ice Cube. Getting drenched by Rain might be akin to the first time eating sushi; "This is different, but I think I LIKE it!"

Laughing

Since when did Ice Tea or Ice Cube become sex icons?

Women getting their lady bits exited by Justin Bieber...isn't that borderline illegal? Isn't that what gave us Mary Kay whatsherface?

Agreed! This article is overly politically correct crap, Psy isn't that ugly, he is just average. He has a different style and people like different styles. Most Koreans love him.

But he is not as funny as this guy.

I like that he looks hetrosexual and has a sense of humor about himself. While I think that's core to his international appeal, not sure Koreans get that connection.

gangnam style is the stupidest song I have ever heard!
and it really makes me wonder about this generations music tastes.

I wonder if they listened to Pink Floyd The wall,
they would probably think it sucks rights?

It's just pop music. The average person has always had really bad taste in music, although probably getting more bad.

I think modern pop music is awful too but I'm prepared to admit that it's probably a result of my age and previous generations thought exactly the same about the music I liked as a teenager. The Wall is a great album but it would pretty much clear the dance floor at a club or party. It came out in 1979 which was the same year 'Grandma got run over by a reindeer' was a massive hit, so bad taste isn't exactly a new thing.

Well, the recreational drugs have changed since the days of Slightly Annoyed. They favoured downers but DINK steroid munchers favour uppers. When downers come back in vogue, so will the progue music. Don't see that happening soon, I'm afraid.
