Can't say I followed his career too closely. I do remember him from the Clarnece Thomas hearings. I was probably aware that he had switched to the Democrats in 2009, but quickly forgot about it.

Specter first gained national attention as a young prosecutor, who, as assistant counsel to the Warren Commission, was seen as the main architect of the controversial single-bullet theory that claimed the same bullet killed President John F. Kennedy and wounded then-Texas Gov. John Connally, notes the Washington Post. That theory was the focus of the 1991 film JFK. In the Senate he was long regarded as its sharpest legal mind, points out the New York Times. Besides his party switch, hell likely most be remembered by the key role he played in several Supreme Court nominations, helping defeat conservative nominee Robert Bork in 1987 as well as securing Clarence Thomass confirmation by aggressively questioning law professor Anita Hill four years later (video of the questioning after the jump).
