If you are bound to a contract with your cell phone provider, how much is the average smartphone plan?

In Canada for $68/mth I get 1gig of internet, 200 minutes of anytime calling. Unlimited texts throughout N. America. Free calling after 7pm and weekends. Other features as well, such as call display, answering service, 10 numbers I can call for free anytime, etc.

I remember back in 2005 paying $26/mth for my cellphone plane in Korea, but that wasn't a smart phone plane. And I think I was charged for texts. Often my bill would be upwards of 50,000 won.

I'm hoping I can find a smart phone plan in Korea for 55,000 or less. Possible?

My plan costs 55k per month (before adding on phone cost) for unlimited 3g, about 200-300 minutes per month, and I'm not sure how many texts (maybe 300?) I never go over, because I usually just use kakao talk for messages, and that comes out of my unlimited 3g plan.

That sounds pretty good. Thanks for the reply.
So they cost of the phone is added to your plan? How long are you locked in for? 2 or 3 years? How much more per month does that cost?

I did a 2 year plan. My Galaxy S3 costs about 25k per month, but I could have gotten a different-yet-still-very-good one for free. I opted for 3g service instead of LTE because the LTE cost quite a bit more, and I use a lot of data. Also, the 3g is pretty fast. I can stream cable from my slingbox in the states, so I can't imagine needing it to be any faster than that.

Anyone knows what happens at the end of your contract?

It will keep being charged until you tell them to cancel it. There will be no fee to cancel it except for whatever you owe for that month.

Yeah but the cost of the phone itself is included in the monthly installements. Does that mean after the contract ends you just pay for the plan (about 15,000 won cheaper afaik)?

Wow... which carrier allowed you to get one of the new phones on 3g instead of 4g? SK Telecom wouldn't allow 3g on anything newer than the S2 when I signed up for my Note. I was forced to go 4g, which sort of sucked because I agree 3g is enough and streams fine.

I went to SK about a month and a half ago and got it. My husband got the LG Optimus Prada phone for free in 3g. The SK salesperson offered either 3g or LTE, so it may have been the particular store to which you went.

My plan ended last month. I was paying 54k a month for my plan and 16k a month for the phone a total of about 70k a month

I was pleasantly surprised to find my bill last month was 41k. I still get a 13k a month subsidy. Thanks SK, I will be using my phone until it dies.

I'm paying 80k but thats because I don't have other bills and live in a small town. I got the S3 as well. If I had bills back home or lived in a big city I would probably have just got the S2 for 50k or even done a pay as you go anycall phone. But I need unlimited data, and I wanted a cool phone. People who say WiFi is everywhere aren't telling the truth in my opinion.

Wow!! That's really expensive each month. Do you guys find it's worth the 50-70/month you're paying? Are you honestly using that many minutes and data each and every month?

I'm using KT/Olleh and paying just around 30,000/month just for minutes/texts/mms, without any data. I bought a used 3G phone for 200,000.

I disagree-- I find wifi pretty much everywhere, including supermarkets, cafes, and restaurants, and I live in a large town/small city. I can live 10-60 minutes w/out data until I get somewhere with wifi.

I paid 80 bucks a month back in NYC, after taxes, for a non-smart phone plan. To me, this is cheap. All I had back home were about 400 minutes and unlimited texts.

I pay the same now and have unlimited data, so don't need the unlimited texts.

Yeah this is why I pay what I pay. I'm paying as much as I did in the states for faster internet and a way better phone. less texts and minutes, but thats what k talk is for. Unlimited data is the way to go, with the way those MB's add up in my opinion.

I agree.

I have a question for you all. Can a person buy a 2G phone overseas, bring it to Korea and have it connected to an existing 2G phone number in Korea?
