Seoul City will step up measures to remove toxic gas in the subway following a report on increased radon levels in subway trains.

The city government said Sunday it will better ventilate 37 subway stations which it believes have high levels of the lung cancer-causing gas.

The measures come after a September report that the level of radon in the trains rose by an average of 53 percent and up to 166 percent since screen doors were installed at subway platforms.

The installation of screen doors at platforms and the fact that the ventilation facilities are now running for reduced hours for energy conservation purposes have been cited as the cause of the rise in radon levels.

Quote:
The city has designated 37 stations as areas needing special attention. Among them are 17 stations of line 1 to 4 which are run by Seoul Metro and 20 stations of line 5 to 8 run by the Seoul Metro Rapid Transit Corp.

For line 2 the stations are Dongdaemun History and Culture Park, Euljiro 4(sa)-ga, Jamsil, Ewha Womans University, Ahyeon and Sports Complex. For line 3 they are Jongno 3(sam)-ga, Chungmuro, Gyeongbokgung, Anguk, Dongnimmun and Seoul National University of Education. For line 4 they are Chungmuro, Mia samgeori, Namtaeryeong, Hoehyeon and Samgakji.

They were designated as special areas because these stations are located deep underground and have been built on granite.

Twenty stations of line 8 have also been set as areas requiring attention, for the same reason.

The stations for line 5 are Chungjeongno, Seodaemun, Gwanghwamun, Jongno 3(sam)-ga, Euljiro 4(sa)-ga, Sin geumho, Dongdaemun History and Culture Park, Cheongu, Haengdang, Wangsimni and Dapsimni. For line 6 they are Korea University, Wolgok and Yeokchon, and for line 7 they are Suraksan, Madeul, Nowon, Junggye, Hagye and Gongneung.

Although the concentration levels of radon in subway stations and trains remain at levels harmless to humans, we have prepared measures so that we can address citizens concerns, said an official.

Radon gas at levels that are harmless? But the 37 stations require special attention?

I'm confused.

They seem to have the part about who to blame covered though.

I never liked those screen doors; we've had subways systems for decades without them and the cost seems to far outweigh the benefits.

I've seen a radon checker near my station. Looked like a white little box on top of a mic stand.

I'm more concerned about the high levels of pushing and shoving.
