I generally regard Koreans as being a pretty kind and generous people. I can't count how many times I have been lost and some kind person has walked or driven me to where I was going. But today I had the most horrible experience and I just need to vent it here so I can release it....

I was driving to Lotte Mart this evening about 8 or so to do some grocery shopping. Just as I was about to turn my car dies. Right in front of Seoul Station... one of the busiest intersections in Seoul. In addition to the god awful traffic it is pouring down rain. I step out of the car to attempt to push my car out of the way. I manage with the help of a million Koreans honking at me. (Now I honestly didn't expect them to help in this weather but did they think the honking at me as they drove by was helping?) So I go back into the car to call a service truck. I forgot my phone at home. I now attempt to try to get someone to help me. I attempt to flag people over. No one will stop. Not taxis or even the police. I notice that a cop is parked accross the 10 lanes of traffic to the sidewalk. I try to wave him over.... nothing.... I then procede to dodge traffic to get to the cop. I explain the situation as best I can... (my Korean is far from perfect) He tells me I should call my insurance company. I asked him why he sat there for 10 minutes watching and not helping... he rolled his window up. After an hour the car service came and I was on the road after about 20 minutes.

Now I can't blame this all on the Koreans. I saw two different cars with foriegners driving that also didnt' help out. But for the police to completely ignore me, my god... On the plus side.. they sent someone out in the pouring rain to fix my car for a grand total of 14,000!!!

Was the cop 17 years old. They usually are.

The cops here are as much use as a fart in a spacesuit.

He simply doesn't see helping stranded foreigners as part of his job description.

His job description being;

1.Get on the megaphone when someone is parked illegally.

2.Dress down people for jaywalking while ignoring food delivery guys doing 30mph on the side-walk.

3. Take bribes whenever possible.

Do I sound cynical? That's because I am.

Oh, and Not Angry....You should be angry!!!

Cars in korea are more trouble than they're worth, has always been my longstanding conviction...
As for the police...they're mostly harmless. They're only doing the job for the sake of a nice uniform and regular paycheque. there isn't much moral conviction or initiative to professions here.
