This one really hits home because freshman are my favorite students.

The University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill has removed the word freshman from official university documents, citing as their reason an attempt to adopt more gender inclusive language.
We are committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of our community, reads a statement administrators sent to Campus Reform on Monday.
The University of North Carolina (pictured above) dropped the term freshman in an effort to adopt more gender neutral language.
Consistent with that commitment, gender inclusive terms (chair; first year student; upper-level student, etc.) should be used on University Documents, websites and policies, it continues.
A spokesperson for UNC declined to further elaborate on the universitys reasoning for implementing the language change.
Some students, however, expressed discontent over the change in policy.
Brandon Hartness, Executive Vice Chair for the schools college Republicans chapter, told Campus Reform he feels the university is allowing political correctness to drive their decisions.
I feel like they are making a big deal out of nothing, said Hartness. Girls are not going to deem the word [freshman] as sexist.
I feel like most people dont even think about it, he added.
Karen Moon, Director of UNC News Services, did note that the policy change occurred in 2009. It has recently garnered attention after the libertarian news personality, John Stossel, highlighted it in his show earlier this month. |

PC people in charge, mainly in the educational field, should be lined up and shot. Ohhhh we might offend someone with a term that has been around for a hundred years. Makes me sick. |

The term "Sophmoric" is usually used to describe intellectuals that are not considered by the describer to be very deep. Who in thier right mind would care about the "man" in Freshman? |

It's a rare case when I find myself agreeing with Dodge, but in this case I absolutely do. It's PC gone mad |

I personally prefer '1st year student'. Not a huge fan of the 'freshman', 'sophomore', 'junior', 'senior' labels.
In any case, 'freshman' is no worse than 'frosh', which is not unlike the sound someone makes when clearing their throat. |

Freshmen is yet another example of the Patriarchy imposing themselves on innocent women. Check your privilege at the door before you post. |

Young male students entering their 1st year of university are traditionally called "Freshmen".
Young female students entering their first year of university are traditionally called "Fresh Meat". |

So what do we call first-year students now? Freshpersons? Fresh people? Noobs? |

What wrong with calling them first-year students?
But since this is up for debate...
First year - Frear - They have more time to be free - to drink and play.
Second year - Sear - They begin to see the light of education.
Third year - Tear - They are sad when they realize the student life is coming to an end.
Forth year - Fear - The student life is at an end. The fear of the work-a-day world is in their hearts and souls...and eyes. |

Don't be willfully dense. You simply say first years. We don't call first graders freshmen, why should we subject women to this kind of prejudice? |
