I have a question for you guys concerning age. I am a fifty year old male that has a MBA and a TESOL certificate from The University of Georgia. I have been a corporate trainer for years but have never taught children. I am retired and want to teach as a means to see places. Is my age an issue in Korea? |

Until they come back from the army, teaching university students is a lot like teaching children (only they don't run around the room screaming and trying to shove their fingers in your butt).
And no... that is not a joke.
It is much easier, at your age, to work at a university. Or try for a high school job first, then try for a university once you have gained some experience in Korea. |

I love the humor and quick responses from folks. I am in the process of seeing where I want to try and land. I enjoy reading the commits on this site. Oh, and the knowledge I gain on the various subjects is great too. |

Yes, they do try to stick their fingers in your butt. Mostly, it's kindy kids up through early elementary. It's called Ddong-chim.

The age range that most Korean Universities and schools look at is 18-55. You will make it in, especially with your Masters. I would look at maybe getting one years experience, like mentioned, and then applying for a university. It will allow you more time to travel and still enjoy the Korean lifestyle. My goal is to follow this path and make Korea our new home.
Best wishes to you on your journey. |

Swampfox10mm...I had a prof at UGA that said he had that problem and learned not to turn is back to the children. He was called piggy too. Not sure how all that was connected but it did. |

I'm an older married guy, but I can tell you that I work with a few people who are younger, and would probably get excited by the prospect of a university student sticking their fingers in their butt. We have several gay males on staff, and although not everyone acts this way, it is disturbing that we have overheard comments from two of them about how hot this or that guy student is, "I wonder if he's gay..." etc.. It may become an issue at our school soon, as some other teachers are getting sick of it (I try to lay low).
Anyway, that's off topic. |

Don't forget the punch in the crotch. With kindergarten kids it's like dog-fight in the Battle of Britain: change your direction constantly. |

Whatever decision you make, be forewarned that you will be teaching some of the rudest children imaginable. That idea we have in the West of polite, respectful Asian students. The exact opposite is actually true. I've worked at several public schools now and the sheer rudeness of the students is dumbfounding.
Be prepared. |

Smithington...I read on another blog that being called fat is common too..No guns or beatdowns? My neighbor is a teacher in Atlanta and so far this year she's had a knife pulled on her and her car stolen by a student. Different student each time. Thank God she teaches primary school. The high school kids are violent. |
