I have ICS so it might be different in other versions, but on my phone:
Open the offending message > menu button > "Register spam number" |

But what if there is no offending message and you want to pre-block a number of a person etc.? |

On Jelly Bean if I hold down on a contact, it brings up a menu, one of them is add to reject list. Never actually rejected anyone but I bet a quick google search with "yourandroidfirmwarename how to block number" will bring up many ways to do it |

I use a different SMS program then then the generic SMS/message program on my computer. The program I use has a SMS blacklist. Basically you add any number you want to the list and you will not be notified of the message. There are also separate APPS for SMS blocking.
Check out some of the programs at this link

I use the GO SMS program. It has done to cut down on the spam messages I get.
There are various other options, some a bit more complicated.
Good Luck |

On ICS:
Open mailbox > Press the menu button > Settings > Spam > Spam numbers > Press "+" to register a new number |
