Typical conversation here on the ROK...
One of the K-"teachers" at the school was rambling on about how he is being treated unfairly, getting less pay than the whitey and then saying things like(definitely paraphrasing)..."Get a job in your own country...only losers come to Korea"...ah yes, the loser label. How the Koreans and even the waegooks like to spout on about this. But what does it say about Korea? If your country is the one that is hiring these so-called "losers"...what does that make you? You certainly ain't a winner! I think that the Koreans always have to find some way to make you feel beneath them...they always want to have the upper-hand in everything. They can't stand it when somebody is over here and actually living a pretty productive life. They don't want you to feel comfortable in your environment or proud of your life here. Jealousy...racism...
I'll beat this dead horse into the ground...I live rent-free in a nice apartment building, I work less than 30 hours a week, I save about $1,000 a month here, my job is so easy and stress-free, I don't have to hang out with my fellow co-workers each night and drink soju. Disposable income is everywhere...I never have to worry about money like I did back home. I think it is great. When I leave Korea, I will have the capital to start my own business. To all the fellow waeguks that call us losers, y'all are nothing but a bunch of player-haters that are probably sulking away at your job at 7-11 or working at Dennys. Right back at you.... |

"We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of the dream. Wandering by lone sea breakers, and sitting by desolate streams. World losers and world forsakers, for whom the pale moon gleams. Yet we are movers and the shakers of the world forever it seems."

Well, the guy you reference does sound like a bit of an ass. Jealousy on his part, certainly. Racism?--nah, that's carrying it a bit too far. Many K-teachers definitely resent the fact that we paid more chestnuts for hauling less than they do. We'd probably be the same if the situation were reversed. There's no excuse for him to call you a loser, though. Are all your co-workers that bad? |

Just tell your co-worker that if they were smart enough, they would have passed the Public School exam and wouldnt be earning half salary they are now.
Or you could teach them the Law of Supply and Demand. |

Unless the guy's the Incredible Hulk it's kind of humorous, isn't it? Here's this young Korean guy who's been to Uni (paid by his parents) and brought up the vital prince and lo and behold he's Cinderella.
Loudly complaining to Korean Uni gals who are working until they get married. About the white foreigners getting paid more. What, 25 percent more AND we get a free place to live. Well holla.
I don't envy your position having to listen to this fella. But he sounds like he was 'born with a silver spoon in his mouth', that sorta guy. Spoiled, whiney gotta have it his/the Korean way kinda guy.
Try visualizing him with a soother hanging on a cord around his neck. Or holding a baby bottle with a rubber nipple. Or being patted on the back until he burps up a little on his bib, haha. |

Take him out. Let him get blind drunk like they always do here, then grab a taxi and take him to Incheon airport and leve him there.
That's what we used to do with annoying folks back home.

You can make sincere korean friends here. But there will always be one who resents you and no amount of compromising is going to satisfy some people.
There is jeolousy toward ESL teachers, particularly male.
Tell him(if the cup should runneth over again) that your qualifications are accepted in Australia, NZ, USA, Canada, UK and you are proud of being a proven professional.
Tell him also that "loser" as a label is considered derogatory, and ask him whether he is accusing you for other peoples actions. |

Teacher: So what is your father?
Student 1: he's a lawyer in the city.
Student 2: Mines a doctor.
Teacher: So what does your daddy do?
Student#3: He works in a strip club. He dances on a greased pole and sometimes he goes out the back with strange men to make extra cash.
teacher; err..what?? /(later, aside)- Uhh, why did you say that? you didn't have to!!.. is it true?
Student 3: No, but its better than telling everyone he's an English teacher in Korea.
heard that one today. |

Here's a question for your co-worker;
If we are such losers, why do they keep on hiring us and bringing us over here to teach their children or businessmen?
If we are such losers, why does immigration keep on giving us visas to continue to work here?
We are here to provide a service. If he doesn't like it, then he knows where to put it.
And if the government doesn't like it, then we can go elsewhere where we are needed. |

I am proud to be a loser. I make cheesy films, listen to punk music, play RPGs and computer games and get to travel around the world seeing exotic countries on soemone elses nickel. I rather enjoy being a loser, and as such, kick it...

In the time of chimpanzees I was a monkey
Butane in my veins and Im out to cut the junkie
With the plastic eyeballs, spray-paint the vegetables
Dog food stalls with the beefcake pantyhose
Kill the headlights and put it in neutral
Stock car flamin with a loser and the cruise control
Babys in reno with the vitamin d
Got a couple of couches, sleep on the love-seat
Someone came in sayin Im insane to complain
About a shotgun wedding and a stain on my shirt
Dont believe everything that you breathe
You get a parking violation and a maggot on your sleeve
So shave your face with some mace in the dark
Savin all your food stamps and burnin down the trailer park
Yo. cut it.
Soy un perdedor
Im a loser baby, so why dont you kill me?
Soy un perdedor
Im a loser baby, so why dont you kill me?
Forces of evil on a bozo nightmare
Ban all the music with a phony gas chamber
cuz ones got a weasel and the others got a flag
Ones on the pole, shove the other in a bag
With the rerun shows and the cocaine nose-job
The daytime crap of the folksinger slob
He hung himself with a guitar string
A slab of turkey-neck and its hangin from a pigeon wing
You cant write if you cant relate
Trade the cash for the beef for the body for the hate
And my time is a piece of wax fallin on a termite
Thats chokin on the splinter
Soy un perdedor
Im a loser baby, so why dont you kill me?

Soy un perdedor
Im a loser baby, so why dont you kill me?

I sit in a bar in Thailand and I get into a conversation that almost always involves the question of "What do you do?" Sometimes I get some impressive answers from others, but I always give them an answer that they are impressed with:
I work in Korea where I am a Lecturer in a Women's university. I have 20 contact hours a week. I love my job! I get 4-5 months paid holiday per year, so I can come to Thailand often. I make less money than I did in the States, but I have more disposable income.
I have never had a negative remark from all of that.
I think some of us by into the rhetoric about ourselves and it is not true.
If there are losers here, perhaps they are the ones who would be losers anywhere. They do not care about their jobs, they cause trouble everywhere they go etc.
Most of us bothered to get a degree and then we did what others would not risk doing. We went to a new country and did something new and risky. Having such an experience broadens our view and gives us a world perspective.
I can not understand why anyone would think we are losers, unless of course they are jealous. If a Korean worked in Canada, the US, Australia or some Western nations, I would think that they would be seen as quite fortunate. Maybe the co-worker thinks his country is inferior????? |

| I have a problem calling most ESL teachers losers here but I have no problem calling the men here Beta males. This industry and place doesn't attract the go getter A personality type. |

'L' is for how you look...
I taught it to one of my classes when learning "win" and "lose" and now after games or a wrong answer, someone does the symbol and/or says "loser!". Hilarious! |
