I am looking at a proof-reading job and I'm not sure what the going rate for this kind of work is. The job is basically to proof-read a 50-60 page thesis for a Korean student. Knowing the way Koreans write, and their often abysmal composition skills, I think it could be very time consuming. I have been offered 400,00 for the entire thesis or 5,000 per page.
I have never done this kind of work before, so just looking for any heads ups from people. |

It strongly depends on what subject the thesis is on. Anything very scientific could end up being a mine field of technical jargon you'll have to understand in order to correct the English. That's usually what takes up the time in my experience. If I was doing it,I'd charge by the hour. Slightly less than what you'd expect for teaching |

For above reason, you'd literally have to rewrite the entire sentenses, paragraphs, and rearrange the order of paragraphs. I'd scan it first before negotiating the offer. |

I do some freelance proofreading and my rate is $7 USD for full page. That is for low-level test prep stuff. If it's technical in nature, you should ask for more.
Just to give you an idea: 1 hour of work end up being about $25. That's more than I make teaching. |

You should probably clarify the difference between editing and proofreading, both with yourself and with the client. Proofreading is basically just looking for typos and simple grammar errors. If you don't have any editing experience then 5k is a bit low but not unreasonable.
If you are actually expected to edit then you can jack up the price proportional to the work. Or if you think you can get additional work then lowball around 10k as an introductory offer.
5K won per page for full-on editing is really low, like doing someone a favor prices. |

I charge 50k am hour (that's friends rates). Today I finished 15 pages in 3 hours. I can't imagine a student could afford this.
I avoid doing this kind of work like the plague. There is no money in it, it causes trouble and it's boring. |
