|
|
There are many job postings that claim 30 hours per week. Is that 30 hours at school or 30 hours of teaching? 30 hours of actual teaching time is a lot. That would be like eight 45 minute classes per day. Some of these schools claim a 1:00-9:00 PM work day which is actually 40 hours at school per week. Does anyone have a job like this and can you tell me what exactly happens in a day? For example length of classes, breaks, expected prep time? At the moment, it doesn't sound very tempting to me for 2 million won. |

You should never sign a contract for 30 hours a week.
As you pointed out if you are required to be at the school from 1-9 that is 8 hours a day 40 hours a week. In my experience hogwan owners can manipulate this time in many ways. Unpaid prep, being onsite earlier, split shifts....etc...
My current job(which is over in 9 more days )said 30 hours a week.
When I started I worked from 2-8 with an overtime class MWF from 830-930. At the 5 month point in my contract they changed the schedule due to winter vacation to 11-7....I was flexible I figured its only for one month so no problem...oh yeah they stopped paying overtime . At the end of winter vacation they changed the schedule to2-830 because they extended classes from 40 minutes to 45 minutes. And my adult class from 9-10. Did I mention they stopped paying overtime? 6months into my contract they told us that the 10minute breaks between classes no longer counted towards our hours....so in effect no overtime and a hell of a lot more hours at the school..No paid prep...No overtime.
From now on I will only sign a contract with set work hours and classes. Ie: 2-8 five classes a day. Just signed up with EPIK and will be working from 9-5 but only 5 classes a day for 2.64 at a elementary school. Looks like it will be fun. |

30 hours generally means 30 classrom hours. Keep in mind though, many schools consider 45 to 50 minutes(class time) an hour. |

Also keep in mind some don't, so get it written in the contract. |

If you're teaching kids, I'd also see if I could get the shift times written into the contract.
My current hogwan (eight more working days!) has me teaching 2-10 every day, even though they "promised" me that Friday would be a half day.
If you're teaching adults, it's a different matter. |

*beep* hogwans! Less than 3 months for me and I'm free of that manipulative shit.
Get it written in your contract. 5-6 classes/day with a guaranteed shift. Otherwise you have a 99.9% chance of being assraped on the hours.
That 99.9% is a scientifically proven statistic as well. |

my school its 25 hours actual teaching time and five hours prep time. Of course theyd like me to do more prep, but I draw the line , I spent two hours this weekend on making a fun game for the kids mainly because my damn 12, 13, yr olds get so bored quickly if you dont have something new all the time! |

Yeah, my first job I started with 22.5 hours of actual teaching time and then after more students began to attend our school and I had another class each day, it went up to 26.25 which at first was ok but became significantly more draining as time wore on. I think around 25 hours actual teaching time is as much as I care for. I was getting 2.1 teaching 26.25 hours...so getting 2.0 for teaching 30 hours doesn't sound like a good deal.
I had 40 min. per day of "prep time" but that just meant that parents sent their kids earlier so it ended up as babysitting time. Actual prep had to be done after school or at home. |

For sure. My new contract is written one 50 minute class = 1 teaching hour and 2 office hours are required each week. |

What a lot of people who haven't taught before don't realise is that teaching is HARD work, both mentally and physically.
An hour teaching is comparable to two hours in an office paper pusher type job. |

I totally agree. I'm working on a farm at the moment averaging 10 hours a day of pretty physical work but I have more energy at the end of the day than after teaching 6 classes. |

My contract is for thirty hours, but this month, due to the loss of some singles, I might come in below that.
I wonder it that'll affect my salary... |
