Has anyone had any experience with root canal treatment in Korea.
I just got back from the Dental Hospital in Seoul (Sinchon) and they said I would require root canal treatment on 3 teeth. The estimated time frame is three months and and I will have to go once a week in that period. According to them, there will be some pain in the subsequent 2-3 days after the treatment. Another issue is that the earliest they can see me is the 22nd December.
The pain at the moment comes and goes. Its sporadic but it can be very painful.
I am also juggling the figures around as they said it would cost approximately 2 million won though this is withoug insurance, something i haven't finalised as yet (they couldnt give me any hypothetical figures in the event of insurance). I am studying in Seoul at a University. The fees are paid up till May and it is currently costing me just under a million won per month in living expenses. There is no refund on the fees if a student withdraws within the first week, i am not sure if any special dispensation would be shown in light of these circumstances but I am certainly not expecting any. I have already invested a lot of money on a range of things, too long to go into here.
I have no idea how much it would cost in the UK. I am checking that out now. What I would like to know is the quality of the treatment in Korea? I do understand that complications can arise in root canal. Any thoughts would also be appreciated. |

I've had root canal done, with insurance.
It was done by Sun Network Dental Clinic bunch and they did alright with me.
Ask for pain killers for toothaches at pharmacy. |

Two million is SUPER expensive...you should check prices elsewhere. Are you having an ordinary root canal or is there something special about this one that requires anesthesia or a procedure beyond a normal RC? I've had two or three root canals in Korea without anything more than a local with Lidocaine (?) and they didn't cost more than 400,000 if I recall correctly. You just have to make sure that your doctor understands how important pain management is to you if you fear the pain, because many dentists here seem to undermedicate...I don't know if this is due to a lack of sympathy, an attempt to save money, or ignorance...but I just discussed it with my doctor ahead of time.
Try Navid dentistry...they're near Itaewon, right around the corner from Hanganjin station. The hygeinist there speaks excellent English and they're very thorough in their initial assessment. And, they take appointments until about 6 or 6:30. |

For about 2 million you could get 3 crowns.
After root treatment, teeth become weaker and turn brown so dentists here like to put on crowns. If the teeth in question are visible or are used for chewing, then the dentist probably wants to put crowns on.
If no crowns, it's an astronomically high price.
(Sorry, I think that's the first time I've ever written 'astronomically'.) |

i've had a few done... the most annoying part of the whole thing is that they break it up into 2-3 visits before being completed... with any sort of cancellations, these can drag out into too long of a time frame. |

Root canals act as bacterial sinks which give you chronic, systemic (bodywide) infections.

Yeah mine took 4 months because I went to a university dental hospital and they had a lot of people going, so they could only see me once a month. It was annoying as hell, but the dentist was nice and spoke English perfectly. |

i think 2 million won might be fairly reasonably considering you don't have insurance (assuming that the cost of 3 crowns is included in that estimate), but you might be able to get a better rate somewhere else. the bulk of the money you will pay - whether you have insurance or not - is going to go toward the crowns, not the procedure itself, as crowns can be quite expensive and are not covered by the national insurance.
in terms of quality, in my experience it depends on where you go. the first time i visited a dentist here i didn't research the clinic or know anything about it - and it turned out to be a pretty bad experience. later, i did research and found some great dentists who provided excellent care. in other words, the quality all depends on the clinic you go to - and, from what i've seen, it's best to go somewhere that has a good reputation and that you know will take good care of you. otherwise, you might end up having a crown that doesn't fit (and consequently needs to be redone), gum damage, or a poorly-done root canal that needs to be redone (often meaning you'll have to pay for the whole thing, including the crown, all over again).
with that in mind, i would suggest checking out one of the clinics in apgujeong (though they are somewhat expensive), or you could look into some of the other clinics that seem to have a good reputation with people on here (tufts and boston that come to mind). if you're willing to travel, you could also check out the East-West Neo Medical Center's dental clinic (i think i got the name right), which is an amazing clinic but quite expensive, even more so than the apgujeong clinics. |

I had a root canal and a porcelain crown done in Anyang, near Beomgye station. it was about 700,000 total, stretched over 5 weeks (the crown didn't fit correctly, so I had it redone by the lab twice.) I was happy with the dentist though.

I just got back from Dr. Choi in Hannam-dong. I apparently need a root canal on 1-2 teeth, he's not sure yet.
He quoted me 900,000 per tooth with crown included. He informed me that I could get cheaper elsewhere (400-500k a tooth) but that it would not be as good of a job as he would do.
Does this pricing seem reasonable? Anyone been to this guy before? How soon do I need to decide on getting this done? |
