So I bought a new computer.... a super computer i call it. Toshiba P20.... big ugly gutsy mama of a thing. Problem is, if i try and do anything it pops up with virtual memory warnings. It has 512 megs of ram! For simple stuff, mainly for downloads, from Soulseek and bit torrent. I just can't get through one. Anyone know any way to help me. I tried the windows xp site... but it links you to another site that i have nothing to do with.

Desperately seeking solice in seoul.

This is a bad sign. One of three things that I can think of - Windows isn't installed correctly or got corrupted, a peripheral has a bad driver or is on the fritz, or you've got bad memory (or improperly seated). Others may add to the list.

Anyway, you have some troubleshooting to do. If it's a new computer, why not take it back to whoever sold it to you?

Good luck - lemon

Perhaps your paging file (Virtual Memory) is too small....go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/System.
Select "Advanced" tab, Performance options, and under Virtual Memory the "Change" button.
Go through the Drives until you find the one with the Pagefile on it (will tell you in that little window on the right hand side with a size-indication).
Click on that line. The fields Initial and Maximum size will be filled with the size-data from before.
Change both those fields to "RAM x 1.5"...so say, 768MB (the debate rages on as to what this value should be...I have 1GB of RAM and use 512MB and set this on the drive with my games, for faster performance) and click on the "Set" button, then on "OK".
You may have to reboot.

Other things to try: clean up all your temporary internet file, clean out the Temp directory, click Start/Run, type in: chkdsk x: /f where x: is your hard-disk (do for all disks), then run a defrag on your disks.

Open your PC and check/reseat all your memory-chips (as Lemon said)

http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm

Good site...lot's of info on Virtual Memory.

Applications consuming your memory are also suspect. P2P programs are notoriously poor at economizing memory and often have conflicts with other software like firewalls and anti-virus.

I use Overnet, which after a few hours of running, is forcing my Zonealarm into 70+ MB of RAM consumption!

Start up all the programs you normally use when this error or warning pops up. Do the Ctrl+Alt+Del ONCE.....see the programs running in the background and look at the right side...the memory usage column,,,you may be surprised at what is running and how much memory it's using.

512MB isn't A LOT by todays standards....WinXP uses 120+ MB alone.

Ok....hope it helps. Let us know how you do.

I have had luck just formatting when this problem arises.

Unfortunately this seems to be the best way to fix most of the problems I encounter on the computer.

A bit extreme, but evidently the answer

The only problem is that my internet connection is going on and off... this is easily fixed i think... just get kt man up and going. His first visit was far too short... nothing installed, nothing really typed, just a half arse connection....

I have one now, but as i said, back and forth from on and off... this computer is a week old, I hope performance goes up from here.

1: DO NOT believe everything you read on this board.
2: Don't go taking your "NEW" notebook apart and unplugging stuff...There goes your warranty!
3: Take it back to the store your problem sounds like it could be either hardware or software...

Shame on you other kids telling him to take his notebook apart; and if you didn't know it what was why try giving him advice?!

Yep....my bad for talking about AGP and IDE...hehe...just got on a roll....these two things aside, the advice is proven and sound.

However, RAM is easily accessible on laptops, and getting at it doesn't void the warranty...at least on most laptops.

Yep again...probably hardware or software.... Laughing

Sounds to me like your paging file got messed up somehow. Try to disable it, and then re-enable it. Go to system in control panel, then to the Advanced tab, then Performance-settings, then advanced again, and then hit change. Select 'No Paging File' and reboot. Go back into same area and remake paging file, and make it 2x the size of your physical memory amount (i.e 512MB RAM = 1024MB page file). Make sure to press 'set' before you reboot so it takes effect. If that doesn't work, it could be one or both of the memory modules.
Also, go to Toshiba's website and download any/all driver updates.

Your RAM is defective or your HD is bad. HD's go bad all the time, RAM not so often. I bet it's your HD(hard drive), probably bad clusters. Take the thing back and tell them to get you a new machine asap!
I doubt that it's an OS issue, but to rule it out re-install windows with the OEM disk provided with the machine.

I bet you still get the same problems though. If you have data corruption, that also means that your HD is screwed.

Find out the manufacturer of your HD(Fujitsu, IBM-Hitachi, Seagate). You their diagnostics on it and see what the result is.

Correction: use their diagnostics, not "you their diagnostics."

These are links for the manufacturers tools, but honestly, bad clusters usually don't give this kind of error.

NTFS repairs hard disk errors automatically without displaying an error message. When Windows NT writes a file to an NTFS partition, it keeps a copy of the file in memory. It then reads back the file to make sure it matches the copy stored in memory. If the copies don't match, Windows NT marks that section of the hard disk as corrupted and won't try to use it again. It then uses the copy of the file stored in memory to rewrite the file to an alternate location on the hard disk.

The problem being specifically virtual-memory related makes the diagnosis of bad clusters a bit of a long shot. I have never heard of that type of message coming up in a cluster-related situation.

Unless, of course, the bad clusters are within the page file. Wow.....cool.

We still don't know exactly what the error message is.
