When I was at the airport this morning there was a man approaching some people, asking us to fill out a form. He only approached people who were clearly non-Korean, and specifically wanted to target teachers, as he only gave his form out to those who said they'd been there 1 year.
He didn't introduce himself at all or explain what the purpose of the survey was, and I was dismayed to see that no one asked for this info, or for any info at all. From what I could see, everyone just went ahead and started filling out this rather long document (at least 3 pages, maybe more). I never saw it* but from what I overheard, some of the questions on it included, "How much of the money you earned in Korea was spent in Korea" and also info about your family's socio economic status.
Now...why would anyone want information like this about foreign teachers in Korea?
*When he approached me with his standard opening line, "How long did you stay in Korea?" I questioned him about where he was from and what was the purpose of the survey. He mumbled something about "tourism" and said something like he wants feedback for the tourist board, and I was like, so you work for the government? And he avoided the question, just repeating what he said before, and repeating his question, How long had I been there.... I replied-- just because I didn't feel like handing out this info to someone with no credentials and who hadn't introduced himself properly at all-- that I had only been there a few weeks. This apparently didn't interest him, even though he just said he wanted info from and for tourists. He got quite jumpy in fact, and slinked away with a nervous smile. WTF? Has anyone been approached about this anywhere else? |
