Let's share some winter camp indeas.

I'm doing a 2 week camp. The first week is for grades 3 and 4 and the second is for grades 5 and 6.

Each day is 2 periods, one academic period (we have a text book) and the other is an "activity period". Making extra materials/worksheets for the academic period is easy.

But I'm thinking of some ideas for what to do for activities.

Let's share some ideas.

Thanks!!!

I have a Dropbox folder full of random things that I used for the past year. Some I used for military, some for young kids. If you want to browse through it, I would need your e-mail address to share it with you.

So whoever wants to look, send me a PM.

I should add that I worked at an English Village, so every week was like a camp. These things are mostly based around one-time use, not ongoing lessons.

I want to do some kind of project where the kids have to build something, but I haven't decided exactly what yet. My two ideas were a small crossbow, or a bridge. I think the bridge is the easier idea of the two. Have each group present their bridges when they're finished, explaining why they built it the way they did. Then test each bridge under increasing amounts of weight to see which is the strongest.

If anyone has another idea for a building type project I'd love to hear it! (Did an egg drop last year, went great, but wanna do something different this time around)

We actually had a "Bridge" class at my English Village. It was a 50 minute class based around bridges, with a PPT. They built bridges using paper, and dominoes as weights. Last challenge when we had extra time was to build a bridge across their desks using only dominoes.

We also had a "catapults" class. The students built catapults using chopsticks and rubber bands. Oh my GOD I hated teaching that class haha. It was basically me making 18-20 catapults (one for each kid) because they couldn't follow simple directions. It also had a powerpoint, but I believe it was being renovated into an angry birds themed catapult class when I left. I can try to get those powerpoints for you if you would like. Just send me a PM.

I'm trying to think of other classes where we built things...

We had a Flubber class
Planets (we built really simple paper rockets)
Cooking (you could make some kind of no bake thing if you don't have a kitchen to use)

That's all I can remember right now.

While not actually 'building', designing your own superhero works with the right kids/ages. Haven't done it in a few years, but I remember it worked well enough.

I haven't yet fully planned, my camp but 2 activities I am definitely doing is the superhero one (great minds and all that) and another one is the egg drop activity.

I'm also going to be doing a design your own island thing where they get to choose the landscape, features and red days.

To the egg-drop enthusiasts, be aware thats something the kids already do annually as a typical part of their Science Day in the fall, so it might not strike them as novel or fun. Building bridges pops up in the regular curriculum too.
