Has anyone here taken this course at Sookmyung (particularly as a prelude to the TESOL MA Program?)
I'm interested in going for a MA TESOL at Sookmyung University but a pre-requisite is to take their TESOL Certificate program. I already have a CELTA certificate, however I'm told I can get 6 credits towards a Masters Degree if I take their TESOL Certificate course.
If I already have a CELTA am I wasting my time/money? Would their certificate combined with CELTA be beneficial in find a job while I work on my MA? I don't see how it could hurt.
Finally, how intensive is the weekend 8 hour course? What kind of "homework" is required outside of class? What is their methodology for teaching? Is it more studying teaching methods and analyzing grammar or more hands on like practicing actual teaching?
I'd appreciate any feedback. The March semester is approaching and I'd like to make a wise decision regarding my future. Thanks. |

If you have a celta/delta you will not have to do the tesol certificate. You can confirm this when you apply for the MA program as you must have an interview to get accepted into the MA program and you have to do a MATE test (proficiency of English test) even for native English speakers.
Having the celta and tesol certificate is not going to make much of a difference in my opinion but other people may disagree
for the saturday class (that means you would go for a few hours on say a thursday night and then do the 8 hours on saturday) it can get quite intense especially towards the end of it - it is a lot of work - you first learn the theory side of teaching then you do the practical side so teacher demo of your lessons are done quite oftern |

Thanks very much for the information. I'm still waiting for interview information. I was told I still have to take their TESOL course even with the CELTA but I can ask about that again during the interview.

I did it and it was worth it. The methodology classes alone encompass what you likely learned in the CELTA, and then some. There is a lot of writing and several demo lessons to be taught. It's also worth 9 credits, not 6, towards the MA TESOL. I have a few friends who were already in the MA program and took a semester off to do the TESOL certificate, because the price is half of a regular semester for the same amount of credits. |
