I just got my visa back and I'll be teaching at a public school soon. My recruiter says I should make an introductory lesson and bring some gifts from back home, but I'm oblivious as to what I should bring, or what to do the lesson on. Would doing something about life in the States work, or would it be something that's overdone? Not exactly sure what to do.

Thanks in advance.

In the intro lesson: show that your life back home was absolutely fabulous. Show that they are lucky and you are doing them a favour by choosing to teach them. Reinforce that if they learn to speak English then they too can be part of that awesome fabulousness. Imagine, not going to hagwons at nights, your own bedroom, grass playing fields, don't have to go to college, don't have to eat kimchi and pretend to like it, fat is beautiful, 32-ounce steaks, marijuana legal, same-sex marriage, and much much more... To that end, prepare slide shows and video clips of your Trueman Show.

Why is your recruiter telling you about school issues? If they are mentioning it, then it's just a general remark to get you thinking about teaching.

I am not saying it is bad, but you will find it hard to plan everything before you walk into a classroom. Even if you have the perfect plan, the students might not be cooperative.

You have a month or two of fame by being the new teacher. It won't matter what you teach. Then, they will get tired of you. Try planning what you will do then Wink
