"Canadians ordering passports from outside the country will see the biggest jump in fees. It will cost $190 to apply for, or receive, the five-year document in another country, up from $97. The fee will be $260 for the 10-year version requested under the same circumstances.

The cost of a child's passport is also going up to $57, an increase of $20, if ordered domestically. It'll cost $100 if the child's application is processed outside Canada."

No,the 10 year version will become available to Canadians for the first time in July,2013.

I say it's about bloody time as most of the world has been on the 10 year passport for years it seems.

It'll be great not having to worry about renewing every 4.5 years.

yikes! damn. wish i had've had mine renewed a couple of months ago. gotta have mine done very soon. interesting how the new 10-yr one is priced at about the same as TWO 5-yr ones would've cost at the old price. of course, we'll all grin and bear it. my prediction is that they'll end up completely phasing out the 5-yr passport, and pretend like they're doing everyone a favour by dropping the 10-yr one's price down to 200 after a yr or 2.

Isn't it ironic that the ones who say they need more money are the same people who print their own money.

Of course they will phase out the 5 year passport....that is the idea of the creating the 10 year passport...lol

I for one WELCOME the 10 year passport. As someone whose family travels a lot, I will be quite happy to have 10 year passports.

It is about time.

Now the previous fee for a 5-year passport renewed in Canada was 87CAD. This worked out to 17 bucks and change per year.

The 10 year passport, if renewed in Canada goes for 160CAD so that works out to 16 bucks per year. It is actually cheaper over the term. I will gladly pay 160CAD to have passport peace of mind for 10 years.

The Fees for overseas renewal are higher but they have always been higher. Again you need to figure out the per year cost of your passport and factor in the convenience as an expat of having a 10 year passport instead of a 5 year passport.

The new 10 year passport will also be electronic (epassports) which has added benefits.

Finally the passport fees had not been raised since 2001, except for a 2CAD raise for shipping a few years ago so a fee hike was to be expected....

Exactly lol

In all seriousness, it theoretically better protects your identity from ID theft.

I personally do not care about the tracking issue because frankly they already track us very well. I am just happy with the 10 year term.

Were I to be an expat now I would love the 10 year term as it saves you one renewal process over the previous passports and makes for ease of travel as it will take twice as long before you have to worry about your passport having sufficient valid time on it for you to travel.

The e-passport has enhanced technology that will protect us from terrorists. So it's money well spent.

Big Brother is just trying to make us all safer. Can't you see that?

I came in here expecting to be nothing but annoyed, but I can live with a price jump for a 10 year passport extension.

Exactly.

For people who travel a lot it is more convenient not to have to renew the passport every 4.5 years.

I guess Harper just wants some revenue.
Bush had raised passport fees as well.
