So, if Americans have higher salaries but significantly lower wealth, what is causing it?

Answer me this:
Are white Canadians significantly better off than white Americans?
http://money.cnn.com/2012/06/21/news/economy/wealth-gap-race/index.htm
To respond to your question, loads of people in the U.S. live in free or subsidized housing (which means their home is not an asset they can claim). Many are getting Social security benefits for a disability (that number is going up as more and more people cheat the system), and thus are not working or in the workforce. On paper, their assets are zero. They get food stamps and other free things from the government (that are not technically counted as wealth).

Discounting limericks and small southern city US stereotypes, as well as your very general anecdote regarding dialects, it's not as black and white as you think. I was raised in Texas. I have no southern accent whatsoever, nor do 95% of people I know and grew up with. Do we all say "get 'er done" and do all of the America's-cold-beanie inhabitants say "It's cooode, eh"? I hate to use stupid generalizations... but I think you're trying a little too hard. Cool

Inferiority complex? By suggesting it you're revealing your false sense of superiority.

And yes, I'm fully aware that Texas is a big state and so not everyone there speaks with the stereotypical accent. Clearly, my point was lost on you.

If your Irish buddy starts to pepper his English with Gaelic as mine does from time to time to confuse us, you'd also be dumbfounded. Moreover, I've only met one guy from Texas here who spoke like an Hollywood actor in a cowboy movie. He wasn't an English teacher but a soldier. So, clearly, those who speak like that exist...but they aren't here as ESL teachers, are they? Wink

And here's a link to an article that was posted in another thread.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/26/median-net-worth-2010_n_2193764.html

That should answer some of the questions as to why Canadians are better off than Americans at the moment.

As an explanation why Americans don't travel a lot in comparison to people from other affluent nations? Only partly so.

Tourism experts also cite "an American skepticism and/or ignorance about international destinations, a work culture that prevents Americans from taking long vacations abroad and the prohibitive cost and logistics of going overseas."

But that's not what he was really doing, was it?

You're doing a noble job of promoting the ugly Canadian stereotype.

World Traveler,

I don't know the answer but Canadians don't offer welfare benefits to its citizens? And, if they do, no one in Canada ever cheats the system? And, I have no idea to what extent people are actually gaming the system.

I also do not think the number of posts 12 x 7 posted is relevant.

For me the question is if Americans earn more income but have less wealth, what is the cause? And, is government the major difference?

I would be interested in what other people think.

A stereotype which only exists in your mind, incidentally. What's next, jokes about how the French can't fight? Whatever makes you feel better about the sorry state of your country and its tarnished image, eh?

Now, with that said...Let me make this very clear for you. Whether you're aware of it or not, Canadians have a vested interest in seeing the US economy flourish, just as Americans has a vested interest in seeing the Canadian economy doing well. It's very simple. No two countries in the world trade as much with each other as Canada and the US.

I think I can speak for all Canadians who have posted here when I say that we want the US economy to do better and take no pleasure in seeing it struggling.

What?

You bolded his post which stated the Rockies were in the West and the Appalachians in the East, and then linked to maps showing . . . the Rockies were in the West and the Appalachians were in the East.

Plenty of Americans travel to Caribbean and Mexican beaches. Not sure why they would vacation to relatively cold Canada.

Because it is stoic. Not stoic enough, though: a real man's vacation is freezing to death in Tibet. Not many real men left these days, unfortunately. Probably on account of all the freezing to death.

"but it is not really possible to compare the u.S. and Canada.

just not doable.

Geography for one.

Now do you get the maps?

Oh, and we don't have roads in Canada by the way. We get around on dogsleds. And yes, we do live in igloos. Also, our largest urban centre has a population of 23. Beaches? Canada is landlocked, which is why our navy consists of a dozen canoes and five kayaks.
