|
|
If possible, I'd like to take a ferry from Incheon to China (ideally Lianyungang) after I finish my contract. From there, I'd like to visit Shanghai, Hong Kong, then go into the SE Asian countries for a couple of weeks before returning home.
From what I can find online, the procedure to get a visa in China is practically impossible. Option One seems to be buying a ferry ticket and hotel reservation in advance, mailing my passport to a friend in Chicago with application form and copy of my reservations, have her go to the Chinese consulate on my behalf, then mail everything back to me. Option Two would be to go through a travel agency.
Has anybody had luck with either of these options, or know of a different/easier option? It seems like they really want to make it a b***h for people to go to China, especially if you're an American (which I am). $140 for the visa alone makes me almost want to give up on the idea altogether, but it would be a really fun itinerary if we could make it work. |

Option 1 or fly to Hong Kong and work from there if you have less than 6 months remaining on your current ARC.

I just realized that the requirement for a tourist visa requires a round-trip airplane ticket, so I doubt a one-way ferry ticket would suffice. I'm sure they would be sticklers about that.
I know about the Hong Kong option, but I was really hoping to take a ferry if possible. It looks like unless a travel agency offers that service, Hong Kong it is... |

I did that exact trip back in 2002 with two friends. We managed to organize everything on our own but it sounds like the visa requirements may have changed. I'd second your idea of checking with a travel agent. |
