Keep your ear to the grindstone.
Keep your nose to the chimestone.
Keep your heed to the street.
And keep your pocket in the payroll.
Don't drop any of your dimes into the local economy.
Save 6 million won a month of your 8 million monthly income.
Keep goingz until you have half a mill USD.
Be your own boss bra-heem bra-heed.
Be your own boss and stop peddlin' for a 1.9. Have some ballz and get out of the grindstone. |

So success in Korea depends on a paradox?
That's some Zen, sound of one hand clapping, tree falling in the forest brain twister right there!

| After many years in this country I can say the single greatest thing you can do for yourself in this country is...get some earplugs. |

Take your job seriously. learn the language, at least as much as you can. Dress well!!! biggest mistake is that many teachers dress like bums and then are surprised/angry when they do not get any respect. Appearance is so important in korea!! The people i know who made or are making bank in korea look like money everyday!!
Improve teaching credentials.
Be smart with your money, save save save!!! |

and the guy below...NETWORK!
Look respectable, get respect.
Take job serously, yep.
Learn as much Korean as you can, even 10 phrases said with authority, works wonders....
Volunteer at least once a month (great way to network as well)
and ...Say hi! Smile. If youre a guy, girls like that. You dont have to be a social butterfly, but you should smile. It opens up alot of doors (and before you say youre not the type, neither WAS I)
AND you have to provide something of value to others. For us, it comes easie, its usually English. So, when youre meeting someone (esp a gal), try to use a word they may be interested in (for me and my newest date, the word was "awesome".. thats my 2cents. |

1. Learn how to speak Korean. Korean isn't hard if you learn how to think differently
2. Stay safe.
3 Be happy.
4. Don't worry too much about money because even your average Korean thinks it's impossible to save money in the first place. |

1. Have hobbies and interests away from drinking
2. Be careful with your money, yes, but DON'T BE A CHEAPSKATE
3. Cook for yourself. Better than waiting ages and being stared at in restaurants.
4. Go shopping at big supermarkets, not small mom'npop stores. Cheaper and you won't be glared at by the resident ajosshi.
5. Exercise! It will avert dozens of health issues as well as give you more energy for work.
6. Ear plugs. Wear daily, even on the subway- to give a more peaceful day.
7. Read! Especially on those bus or train journeys. Better than being stared at for hours.
8. Be grateful! You have a job in an interesting foreign land. Enjoy your life. |

i agree with most of this, but not 4. nothing in life is free as they say, and "cheaper" big block stores take a big toll on independent businesses.
reverse number 4 and support local businesses or one day korea will look like america with nothing but the same exact chain and corporate stores and restaurants on every corner and no independent businesses or variation in sight. |

There is already a dearth of small shops, but the ones that are competing are getting better at what they do because of the competition. They should indeed be supported, but not the ones that price gouge.
If you're grocery shopping at a convenience store, you need to have your head examined.
One thing to add...
See the country! Get out and about on long weekends. Korea has gotten pretty convenient to get around via train and bus. My first year or two absolutely flew by largely because I was up a different mountain or on a different bus or train practically every single weekend. After a few years, I simply expanded the scope to include neighboring countries. Even now, though, and even after 20+ years here, I still manage to get somewhere new in the country every year. We hit the World Expo in Yeosu last year. First time there and it was great! |

VERY, VERY TRUE.
I also liked: "Have hobbies and interests away from drinking." |

This is so important. Dressing well/fashionable has opened so many doors for me. And not to be size-ist, but if you are fat, try to lose some weight. I have an athletic build, and trying to find stylish clothes was incredibly difficult, especially since I am not based on Seoul. So I adjusted my diet (bye, ramen! I will always love you).
Oh, and try to befriend Koreans. I don't care how many expats you know; if you want to make real money and experience the real Korea, you need Korean friends. |
