Outside of Korea, or going back to my home country (US) what are the visa options out there for us?

I am confident that I will be able to land a gig pretty much anywhere, but i'm at the early stages of looking at other countries where my wife will be able to work as well and just looking for some direction if anyone was in a similar situation. I know there are plenty of places we could go where I could support us both quite comfortably, but she wants to work, so that is a very important aspect of the equation.

She has a degree in animation, but most of the last ten years she has spent working in a restaurant.

Thanks in advance!

Dude, unless she not only has excellent English, she is able to act with non-Koreans outside of Korea, I couldnt answer that.

A Korean professional of any kind is awesome and all but outside of Korea, they have to adjust. so...

If she can score better than 600 on a TOEIC test and doesn't mind being an EFL teacher (K-12 or language school) then Thailand is an option. Wages would be in the 15-20k thb range for her and 30-45k thb as a "new to Thailand" level teacher for you (based on basic E2 requirements).

Due to her lack of experience in anything other than a restaurant her other employment options are largely non-existant in other countries in Asia:
-nothing in her field without related experience
- work related to her (restaurant) experience pays nothing and largely is not open to her anyway (lots of locals to do the job) unless she wants to work in a Korean restaurant in places like Manila, Cebu (no work for you) or Pattaya/Phuket/Bangkok).

.

Since she worked at a restaurant, perhaps you might start one in Southeast Asia.

If you're both under 30 you could go to Australia on a working holiday visa, or you could see if you qualify for one of their needed skills immigration categories.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I'm a certified teacher from the states with a masters in education from a good university. The more I look into it, there are jobs a plenty out there for me that would allow me to support both of us.

I'm starting to think a good route for us might be to have her work with one of the companies that ships Korean students out to study english in a foreign country and needs host familys. We could initial take a student or two to help out with the bills.

However, this would probably be a backup plan if we couldn't find a county that would allow her to work as well. The english teaching is a good suggestion, but I don't think she could score above a 600 on the test.

Keep the suggestions coming guys! We really want to get the f out of Korea next year.

Maybe Brazil.

Lots of Koreans live in Japan, so that is why I mentioned it.
There are Koreatowns in Tokyo, Osaka, Kawasaki and probably other cities as well.

In business, Koreans that know both Japanese and English can do well.

What I hear and have seen is that ethnic Koreans in Japan are by and large Japanese, not Korean, and unless you speak Japanese, it's probably hard to break into their circles.

Despite the presence of not a few successful Koreans in Japan, the barriers due to discrimination persist.

If you can comfortably support the both of you on one paycheck, why even bother taking in a student for homestay. Seems like that would just be added stress that you don't need.

You could move to a city in the US with a large Korean population and she could work in Korea-town. If she wants a decent job though, better start studying English.

I live in Japan and I think things have improved.
I do remember one Korean boy who changed his name in high school and became Japanese.
You do have to fit in, and it isn`t easy.

Koreans do different things. They don`t just work at pachinko places and love hotels. I know two Korean women who taught English in Japan.
They had a good salary.

Koreans born in Japan can choose which passport they want - either from North or South Korea. Or they can naturalize. There are also schools for Koreans who identify with either the north or south.
Obviously the right wing in japan doesn`t like North Korean schools.

For most of us. Sadly for her, she can't go overseas to teach Korean and pay off her debts. Well, maybe the Middle East? They do a lot of business with Korea??

so for her college was a waste of time and money.

Schools like Wall Street or The British Institute in Indonesia would take you in a heartbeat. As would any of the National Plus and even International schools there. Believe it or not Indonesia is very difficult to get a work visa for to teach in. General rule to do things legally you need to have a degree in some kind of education or English - which you have. You could make comparable pays to Korea in any case. Quite a few Korean businesses and companies in places such as Jakarta these days.

Likewise any major city in China. You could get a decent paying gig and get her in on a spouse visa. She could then get work in a Korean restaurant also. Or tutor Korean students if she has decent qualifications.

Pick fruit in Australia for a year?
