Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with Yongsan International School. I am a Canadian licensed teacher with about 5 years working in Korea (at a University). I started the application process for YISS, and I realized the school was Christian based, but I guess I didn't realize how Christian it really was. While I consider myself to be non-religious, I don' mind working in religious institutions. For example the Catholic School Boards in Canada don't require the teachers to follow any religious code or teach religion (unless they are the theology teacher). However, the first online questionnaire for YISS took me by surprise. It progressed as such:
1) Have you worked at YISS in the past?
2) Have you applied at YISS in the past?
3) Do you have a degree?
4) Do you have a teacher's certification?
5) Have you come to the point in your life where you are certain that if you were to die today that you would go to heaven?
I was progressing just fine until question five! At that point if I said "no" I got the reply "Thank you for your interest. At this time, you are not eligible for employment with us.". If I said "yes" I got about 2 pages of bible quotes asking me if I believe the passages are "literal truths". I couldn't bring myself to say yes to any of them.
Anyway, I am wondering if anyone has had any experience working there? Sometimes the application process and the actual teaching environment are different. Is it really that religious? I have visited the campus and even met some of the teachers and students in my travels around Seoul, but none seemed overly zealous with regard to religion. However, you never truly know.
Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated. It seems like a real shame that such a great campus and student population would be out of reach for dedicated, certified, and experienced teachers.
All the best. |
