SEOUL: South Korea has warned that its economy may have further to fall after estimating record declines in sales at top department and discount stores last month, emphasising the severity of headwinds now facing Asia's fourth-largest economy. |

Sales at department stores run by Hyundai Department Store, Lotte Shopping and Shinsegae fell by 8.4% from a year earlier, the finance ministry estimated in a monthly report, compared with a 0.2% decline in December and marking the biggest decline going back to 2005.
Sales at the country's top three discount store chains last month also fell by a record 24.3% from a year earlier, according to the estimates, compared with a 5% decline in December.
The data highlights weak prospects for South Korea in the first quarter as feeble private consumption at home adds to challenges facing exporters. - Reuters |

You could destroy the North Korean government by just dropping packages of US currency. You would have a mass of people running to the border with China. |

I love reading stuff like this concerning the BIG department stores (Hyundai). The prices at those stores are inflated beyond reasonable levels and so it is good for them to suffer a bit. Bring the price down and the public will shop there. It's simple economics. You can't charge 249,000 won for a coat which costs $60 bucks in America and everywhere else. People are finally starting to smarten up it seems and taking their hard earned won elsewhere. |

In the UK we always get these stories in the run-up to Christmas. Every year the high street is doing really badly, and it'll have a 'knock on' effect in the general economy.
Every year, since I can remember. I think it's bullshit. |

No surprise here.
Korean people are a lot more careful with their money nowadays.
So many people have big debts and or are just saving their income.
Add in high inflation and relative income stagnation (it's not ESL teachers)
and the picture becomes clearer.
Also, the clothes people are buying are lasting longer. For example if someone goes out and buys a winter jacket.. They will much more likely keep it for a few years or more - rather than just going out every few months or year to buy a new jacket.
Of course the really rich wont be doing this - but the huge middle class will.
Stores at dept stores have been struggling for a long time now.
The staff and management there have stress beyond belief due to the continuing poor sales figures.
Recently a major clothes retailer here ( codes combine) stopped paying all its staff including management due to lack of funds. Had to pay later.
All is not well in the retailing sector.. |

Well, the gov't forces them to close more often... every-other weekend, etc.... of course their sales will be lower. People favor buying online more than ever. And yes, department stores are insanely overpriced.
I think that to deal with exploding food costs, people are just being more frugal with where they buy stuff from. |

No kidding. A few years ago I bought a manual coffee grinder at Hyundai Dept. Store for 80,000 won. The next day I happened to be in a cafe in Hongdae and saw the exact same coffee grinder for 34,000 won (I bought it and returned the first one). Since then, I never buy anything except the occasional pricey treat (like a Belgium chocolate bar or something) at department stores. |

At least artificially driving down the national economy is a very good way to harm a handful of problematic Korean mega-corporations like Samsung or Hyundai.
Weaker South Korean economy = financial stability in Asia |

I never get it why local dpt. stores think they're so exclusive that they can overcharge on almost everything. One brief visit to any of the major consumer temples in Bangkok makes the Korean flagship stores look like 1970's Eastern Bloc ruble stores.
I also wonder why people should go on buying new things if the 2010 black North Face parka looks exactly like the 2012 black North Face parka... can people actually tell the difference? |

Koreans believe that if you pay more, it must be better. Thus, the department stores developed a marketing strategy to blindly jack-up the price 2, 3, 4, 5,....10 times the normal price as their product is still selling like a hotcake. |

How does this mean that the Korean economy may fall further? It just means that people don't want to shop at over priced stories anymore.
Korea's GNP growth rate was 2.1% in 2012 almost triple Canada's in 2012.
