I have heard from one certain recruiter that GEPIK now "requires a video with a speech about yourself posted to youtube." This "requirement" is news to me. Now I've noticed some of these videos, over the years, but who exactly "requires" them? Is it one region or office? Is it just one recruiter? Does anyone know about this? TIA

I highly doubt they would sift through all those videos. I think the recruiter has too many applicants and is just finding creative ways to say no.

You should be talking with the school anyway, not the recruiter.

Shouldn't an interview be more relevant, especially if someone is already in Korea and available for a sit down interview with a school? Why would they need those videos, anyway?

You could say the same about photos. This just gives them one more thing to discriminate with. Maybe they get too many people that "look different" but are qualified to fool them, they need video to maintain a standard of prejudice in the industry.

A video will show your accent and mannerisms. It's also less easy to do a glossy, photoshopped, photo shoot-style video, compared to the glamorous photos some people use. Also a photo can be from before the fireworks accident.

I was asked to do one, once, and took too long to get a camera with video capability so the recruiter just Skyped me and saw I wasn't completely ugly (only a little bit). I think I was offered the job but took another, better one.

Dont know about it as a requirement, but if someone were able to provide a video clip of him or herself teaching well or even just speaking confidently in front of a camera, it could be a solid way to stand out from a stack of paper applications.

I know what recruiter you're talking about. The video will help you out. It's a way they can shop you around comfortably to different schools. In EPIK, there's no need. But with GEPIK, the school is scheduling the interview.

Co-teachers have a hard time differentiating between resumes of multiple applicants. So instead they can just see a selection of videos of an applicant, and get a feel for how his or her character, personality, and accent.

I don't think its a requirement. But it is designed to help you out.

Heh heh, I was just looking at previous posts and noticed this! My brother almost tore his hand in two with a firework, today it's fine which is lucky because he works with his hands. Me I haven't played with them for years as they go off at the craziest of angles

A friend of mine in GEPIK helped his school interview new teachers and the videos had a lot of influence on who they chose.

Apparently the attractive, young white female seemed too quiet and weak so she got the axe. Another attractive, young, North American white male was cut because he talked way too much and was boring. One guy had a gross beard.

They ended up choosing a black girl from the Midwest because she spoke very clearly and seemed cool and genuine.

Of course they also interviewed these people after watching their videos but they interviewed the people in reverse order of preference and the videos were pretty accurate regarding interpersonal skills.

The videos seem superficial but if they can weed out the people with poor communication skills and grooming standards, I can't see them as a total negative.
