Hello. I am a 25 year-old African-American male who is currently teaching Japan. Next year I may go to South Korea, but I want to find the right job that will suite my aims.
I have three main goals while in Korea in order of importance: 1) study Korean, 2) study taekwondo, 3) make money. I WILL NOT teach adults. I prefer young kids, because they find my physical humor funny. I don't mind being a human jungle gym. After working in Japan I am convinced that East Asians don't want to learn English they just want to be entertained by foreigners. I would want to be in a city, a major city. I don't like the country. I will not work for YBM/ECC.
I myself have 3 years teaching experience in the U.S. not including my teaching in Japan now. I have basic Korean language skills.
Does anyone have any suggestions on a good hogwan to apply to? Should I go with a hogwan, EPIK or does anyone have a different idea?
Is there anyone who is also studying Korean and/or martial arts, and teaching English is just your way of supporting yourself while you do these things? How is your routine? If so, I would appreciate some advice.
Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you. |

Well, a major city depends on how major you want to get, but the three largest in Korea are Seoul, Pusan, and Daegu.
Hogwan jobs are by far the easiest to get because there are just so many of them, but there's a lot of bad ones out there so do your research. If you could go to Korea at some point (should be a pretty quick trip from Japan) you would have a much better chance of getting a job at a school with decent conditions.
With experience I bet you can get a job at a public elementary school also, but I don't know how one gets a job like that. EPIK has gotten mixed reviews (particularly people having trouble getting paid), and efl-law.com pretty much warns people against EPIK.
Do you have a bachelor's? It's pretty much impossible to get a teaching job in Korea without one.
One other touchy but important subject to consider is your race. I'm not sure how it works in Japan, but in Korea schools seem to be reluctant to hire any native english speaking teacher who does not fit the "all-American" (white) image. But if you send along your picture when applying for jobs, so people know who they're getting, you should be okay. Just a warning though that you might run into some trouble there.
Best of luck! |
